Valve introduces Steam Deck

Slightly upset that I got a Deck roughly a year ago only for it to already receive an "improved" model by now.
I am too but that's mainly because they kept saying that we won't see a Deck 2 for years. I know this isn't a big upgrade but it definitely is. Call me a poor fag too but I would've dipped again if there was a $400 model.

At the end of the day that's tech for you

I deserve a discount!

Especially since I decided to splurge on the most expensive model. Maybe even a trade-in!

The smaller bezels and better battery life are things I sure wouldn't mind, plus the larger 1TB initial storage size.
There is apparently a small increase of framerate in games due of the revised APU too

Oh well I bought the OG 512GB model back in June haha
Not that I'm really complaining though, I'm content with what I already have.

The game industry is unhealthier now than ever, but I'm a fucking idiot and have to drop half a grand on yet another gaming machine because it's translucent, JUST LIKE MY CHILDHOOD GAME BOY COLOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I already just bought a 1tb SSD and ended up paying less than the 512gb price was for all of it. It's not really that much of a big deal since the performance is just slight power optimizations and faster RAM, but its annoying.
Literally my situation. I got mine back in May I think (whenever the spring sale was) and I've upgraded the storage beyond what was feasible. The slight fps increase would be nice but it's not worth another 650.

It's harder for me to justify side-grading the OG Steam Deck to the OLED one, unlike going from the Switch V2 to the OLED Switch as I could gift the former model to a family kid relative. It just kind of sucks this new Deck model just popped out of nowhere a few months after I bought mine, but it's not the end of the world too

I doubt either Deck model will be able to run EDF6, my most anticipated 2024 game, in flawless performance but that's not the kind of criteria I bought the system for.

I ain't buying that shit, just like I never bought a Switch OLED or a PS4 Pro when those came out.

I never got the Steam Deck. Should I wait for the next generation or buy the OLED now so they can announce it coming next year?

Valve told Gamer's Nexus that the Deck 2 is still years away because they are waiting for better SOCs. The current Deck is plenty capable but struggles with the most recent of games, but can still surprisingly run more than you would think. So if you get one now you should be set for a couple years. Just be aware that its not as effortless as a console and you will have to do problem solving for stuff, but you can find an answer to everything online pretty much, and the 3rd party tools people have made for the Deck make things a breeze.

I hope there are mad discounts now that the oled model will be on the market soon. I think snagging one for under $400 is a fair price.

If you want to save some money, you can just buy a translucent shell for the steamdeck.
Replacing the front shell means a complete disassembly, including the screen, which is glued in, so it's more involved than a regular shell swap. If you are lazy and don't want to do that then you could replace just the rear shell which is super easy, but most of the deck's frame is the front shell.

I've not really seen it struggle... granted the only recent game I played was baldur's gate 3 but most newish shooters run fine as well. I've not actually run into anything that couldn't run hardware wise on at least medium settings.

Battery life does leave something to be desired though if you push it.

If you're uncomfortable heating the screen up with a hairdryer to melt the glue, then yeah you should avoid replacing the shell. But the option is there if you don't want to immediately spend several hundred dollars again.
The translucent one Valve is offering is a "limited edition" and that's quantity based, so you will probably miss out if you aren't there the second sales open.

A hairdryer doesn't get warm enough. When I opened my last phone we resorted to a dry salt bath on the stove and that worked well. (Wrap it in sealed plastic first tho to protect the ports from debris)

A heat gun for boots works pretty well. Never cracked open a steam deck but repaired small electronics as a hobby ( phones, game boys, tablets, etc) .

Trick is to be patient if you are new at it. You always have to apply a little force. It takes a bit of practice to know how to do it quickly without causing damage.

Hairdyers work they just take a longer, very cheap ones might never work though.

I felt that way too but noticed they didn't make an upgrade for the lowest end model I got anyway.

Now's the time, if you're actually going to use it. This is a nice upgrade and I doubt they'll want to release too many revisions before Steam Deck 2 releases in a few years.
