Me thinks Jason doesn't like competition. It's funny Jason calling this guy a clout chaser when Jason's whole shtick is trying to get as much attention as possible. If this thread was just about Jason himself and not also the adjacent reddit community, I feel like this thread could go into the grift wars board. It seems to fit what Josh described what the GW board is for which is someone who is mostly interested in garnering the largest audience over their actual social cause.

I've watched a lot of Road Guy Rob videos and was an "urbanist" circa 10 years ago when it was mostly StreetsBlog and some local nutters pushing this shit.

RGR does some great videos on making it easier for people to cross busy streets safely, on making roads better for everyone, and on building the right kind of roads for residential neighborhoods -- you know places where kids should be able to ride a bike safely. But he's also living in the real world where 95% of people would prefer to get into the climate controlled box for 1/10th the journey time, and where people would rather live in quiet neighborhoods without tent people and needles everywhere. Extremists hate those who kinda agree but don't preach dogma more than anyone else.

He's also really charming in a blue collar way which reminds Jason too much of his heroin addled hometown.

I think everyone generally has an idea in their head of how they wish they could change the world, but we have to come to terms with the reality that we share it with other people and all we can do is try to be the change we want to see. That's what RGR does well is instead of thinking of a bunch of dreamer bullshit he just looks at something that can be tangibility fixed and is like, "hey if we moved this traffic light here people can see it better".

I remember from a MATI podcast it was mentioned why fringe political pundits are never successful because they're so unpalatable to the average person they fail right from the get go. This shows whenever fuckcars talks to their parents/siblings about urbanism and they get laughed off when they try to explain why a three wheeled cargo bike is a replacement for a truck.

Most people like comfort which is why most of fuckcars fails to realize why their movement will never appeal to most people. For example I think more people should use open source software, but at least I can logically understand why they want something that just works out of the box instead of something that requires you to configure a bunch of shit with the command line.
