To be brief, Gopher has seen more usage lately, and people have been abusing the protocol by adding new item types and other things in ways that go against Gopher's very basic design. A guy named Solderpunk decided to take these adjustments, and design a brand new, incompatible protocol around them. If that sounds stupid, that's because it is.

The main adjustment is the addition of mandatory TLS. The proponents of Gemini love to claim that implementing a client from scratch can be done over a weekend, ignoring how a TLS library must be used, due to the grotesque complexity thereof.

Despite all of the extra complexity, Gemini is incapable of any complex formatting, such as that available several decades ago on typewriters. If that sounds stupid, that's because it is.

Gemini also lacks very basic features such as download continuations, and I believe even download lengths.

The fact that nothing important has ever been written over Gemini and never will be is the icing on the cake.

Gemini is great, I like it a lot. It's a dumb little protocol that includes TLS and lacks a bunch of features, and that restriction is what makes it enjoyable. Sure, you can't do server-side formatting and 'nothing important has been written over Gemini', but it's still fun to fuck around with. Plus it's really zippy over shitty internet connections, even downloading large files. Many Gemini clients work with Gopher too, so there's not a strong separation between content on one protocol from content on the other. It's nice to have a quiet place online. Is it useful? No. Does it absolutely need to be 'useful'? No.

About his toy language: It seems to me that the most retarded aspect of it is its standard library. It seems to be rather unprincipled in design. The website itself states that Hare is supposed to have "the 'correct number' of batteries." Those scare quotes are not mine, they were there already. It seems the language philosophy is to not have any consistent bar for standard features. You can see it has a cryptography module for the many uses of cryptographic primitives, but it doesn't have something like BLAS, which has a large number of uses as well and requires about the same amount of care to implement properly. It also exposes part of the language functionality and program parser as modules, but it doesn't go all the way and allow Hare programs to compile new functions and execute them, JIT-compiler-style, which would be interesting. Unfortunately, Hare is completely uninteresting. The module listing on the website also seems to oddly mirror the Python standard library.

It just seems that Drew's toy language is a combination of C and Python with modern syntactic sugar that nobody ever asked for.
