I looked it up and there are people who do this, but there are also people who eat cornstarch.The fact he used it to 'Caramelize' the outside of his turkey, that however is 100% unique Jack. Its impressive how he keeps managing this.
Real browning technique, dissolve a TINY amount of baking soda in water and brush with it before putting it in the oven. You don't really need to do this, though. If you cook at the right temperature and baste with the pan drippings a couple times, your problem will more be that it gets too brown (and dry) so in actuality you want to cover it loosely in foil at some point to slow that down.
He probably just made up the soldier and threw it away because it was inedible even by Jagoff standards.Did he ever mention anything else about it? He said he was going to send it to some soldier but we never get any closure on that anecdote. Almost as if it never happened and he just ate it himself.
