Amusingly, back in the bubble the left blamed their losing in 2012 midterms over the right pushing gay marriage bans which supposedly brought the conservative christians out to vote. Yeah most people lose money on stocks because they keep trying to make money fast. The easiest way to make money is to actually plan to only sell in a decade.
I for one have a bunch of stocks I am investing in with the idea of only selling once the market recovers from a crash. I got some good bets on food and silver/gold/rare earth mining.

Then things are really bad. Not selling when a market crash happens would mean a stockholder has some kind of confidence in there being a recovery. Boom and bust cycles in economics rather then outright declines are more common but for things to not get better at all would be indicative of decreased financial activity and the government most likely failing in a response to stop the money problems.

Decade three sees the rebound and the profit if you held.
However when a market crash is that severe the rules start breaking down. While in theory you should recover and profit, in practice your stocks could just become worthless because whatever you invested in stopped existing. Or in a really serious case the market itself has changed and your guarantees have no more weight to them.
