Disaster Iceland volcano: Emergency declared over volcano Fagradalsfjall eruption concerns - lol fag

Iceland has declared a state of emergency after a series of earthquakes raised fears of a volcanic eruption.

Authorities have ordered thousands living in the southwestern town of Grindavík to evacuate as a precaution.

The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) says it is concerned large amounts of magma - molten rock- is spreading underground and could surface there.

Thousands of tremors have been recorded around the nearby Fagradalsfjall volcano in recent weeks.

They have been concentrated in Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, which had remained dormant to volcanic activity for 800 years before a 2021 eruption.

On Thursday, the increased seismic activity in the area prompted the closure of the nearby Blue Lagoon landmark. More than 20,000 tremors have been recorded in southwest Iceland since late October.

Iceland's Civil Protection Agency said the decision to evacuate came after the IMO could not rule out a "magma tunnel that is currently forming could reach Grindavík".

In a statement on Friday, the agency said people must leave the town, but also emphasised it was not an "emergency evacuation" - calling on them to "remain calm, because we have a good amount of time to react".

"There is no immediate danger imminent, the evacuation is primarily preventive with the safety of all Grindavík residents as the principal aim," it added.

All roads into the town of around 4,000 people are closed other than for emergencies, to ensure traffic can get in and out.

In an statement on Friday, the IMO said "significant changes have occurred in the seismic activity", with tremors moving towards Grindavík over the course of the day.

It added that magma has likely extended beneath the town and it was "not possible to determine exactly" whether or where it could emerge.

"The amount of magma involved is significantly more than what was observed in the largest magma intrusions associated with the eruptions at Fagradalsfjall," the IMO said.

Iceland is one of the most geographically active regions in the world, with around 30 active volcanic sites.

Volcanic eruptions occur when magma, which is lighter than the solid rock around it, rises to the earth's surface from deep below it.

In July, Litli-Hrutur, or Little Ram, erupted in the Fagradalsfjall area, drawing tourists to the site of the "world's newest baby volcano".

The site was dormant for eight centuries until eruptions in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

I'm a little confused as to why the cat's still there. Aren't animals supposed to instinctually know that shaking ground means grave danger, and get the fuck out of town before the big one hits?
The motives of your average cat are difficult to discern. There's probably some fish somewhere he can now devour as no humans are protecting it.

The Chief of Police in Suðurnes has decided to allow residents into a defined area in the Þórkátlustað district in Grindavík, this is only for the purpose of picking up pets and essential belongings.

This will be a planned and controlled operation under the control of the police. This authority only covers this particular neighborhood, and not other neighborhoods or areas in Grindavik. Please note that a special operation is underway to collect all horses in the horse district north of Austurver.
Look like some people will be briefly able to go back and collect pets and valuables

Did someone drop Teslas earthquake machine in a hot spring?

Most of the time yes, but cats sometimes just don't give a shit about danger.

Some residents able to go back and saved some sheep. I think there was some horses as well that were being taken as well.
I went to a Facebook page and there's some pictures of a crack going through the area

Met Office reveal latest data and analysis

In its latest announcement, the Icelandic Met Office have revealed that 900 earthquakes have been detected since midnight, while the ground around the north and western parts of Grindavík has subsided by over a metre.

They say "according to our latest estimates, the volcanic hazard assessment in and around Grindavík is unchanged from 12 November. All monitoring systems are being monitored closely in real-time, especially near Grindavík, for any indications of sudden change. The natural hazards monitoring team at IMO is operating at maximum surveillance, while Civil Defence coordinated short-term, temporary access to Grindavík today, 13 November."

Edit: Video with some more information. Shows some pictures and videos from Grindavik. Lots of large cracks and deformations destroying roads and infrastructure through the entire city.

It is still ongoing. Hasn't erupted yet, but there is been a higher detection of SO2 (sulfur dioxide) which means the magma is very close to the surface. Even if there is no eruption, the town is quite bad state with roads broken and houses destroyed from the land depression and spreading.

Kitty's gonna be literally toasted once that thing finally blows up.

I remember few years ago when el Niño caused so many mudslides here, people evacuated but the stray dogs were still on the streets. Some journos took a few in their vans before escaping. After that, when the rescue teams came back, they also had to rescue some dogs who got trapped because the water dragged them around. Now, that's water and mud... this is lava.
So you're saying when the rescue teams come back this time they might find a bunch of......hot dogs? Dare I say it - flaming hot lava dogs?

Someone had to say it

That said, its still at the point where things could go either way but even if we get a best case scenario here its going to fuck things up for alot of people and probably cause alot of paranoia in the future, to say nothing of how it could affect the tourism industry

All jokes aside, "fagra" means "the fair".

For some other fun Scandinavian words, if you travel by car you might on occasion spot an "infart". And if you travel far enough by bus or train you will eventually reach the "slutstation".

By the way, "kiss" means "pee" in Swedish. You guys kiss each other in the mouth lol
Reminds me of a Norwegian saying: It's not the fart (speed) that kills you, it's the smell (collision).

I hope someone gets the poor kitty! :(

Another one of these going off.. lovely. Even harder to say name as well.

Mercury injection?
It's probably a bad translation from icelandic -> english. (Edit: I'm 99% sure it's supposed to be magma intrusion)
People over the last week were able to go back and get pets and valuables and I think all animals were now accounted for.

Here's a video from the Just Icelandic guy. It looks like there was a rapid uplift in the land in the last day after it had subsided a bit.
30mm land uplift in 24 hrs and more magma inflow than ever before or 50 cubic meters pr. sec so things have started to look bad again and it's only a matter of time when the earthquakes start again by Svartsengi, and what they scenario they will produce this time.

Latest updates. It hasn't erupted, but there is still ongoing activity.

The land around the power plant and blue lagoon moved 1m to the west and 25cm to the north during the earthquakes last month. | https://www.mbl.is/frettir/innlent/2023/12/03/svartsengi_faerdist_til_um_heilan_metra/

May not get an eruption, but there is still ground deformation going on.

Thank you for the updates. I appreciate people who do the work my lazy arse won't.

It must be unbearable for the village residents. They fled for fear of an eruption, but instead the ground just endlessly writhes and destroys their homes. It's like the worst possible version of a sneeze that just won't come out.
