Entire Town Told to Evacuate After Kentucky Train Derailment

A small town of approximately 200 people have been urged to evacuate on the eve of Thanksgiving after a train derailment that has caused concern due to a chemical spill.

In a statement Wednesday night, Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency following the multiple-car train derailment that occurred in Rockcastle County, in eastern Kentucky.

“Response efforts for the incident are ongoing, and local officials are encouraging those in the town of Livingston to evacuate,” the statement said.

“By issuing a state of emergency, we are ensuring that every state resource is available to help keep our families safe,” Gov. Beshear added. “Please stay clear of this area as state, local and CSX officials respond.”

Railroad operator CSX encouraged concerned residents to utilize accommodation the company secured in nearby Mt. Vernon. “In addition to the hotels, the CSX team is working with local restaurants to provide meals for affected residents. CSX is covering the cost for both,” a statement said.

The state’s Emergency Operations Center has also been activated to Level 4 while the state’s Energy and Environment Cabinet Emergency Response Team is also on scene.

CSX confirmed preliminary information indicated at least 16 cars were involved when the train derailed at 2:23 p.m.

Of those 16 cars, two molten sulphur cars had been breached and caught fire.

“When molten sulphur burns it is known to release sulphur dioxide,” CSX said, adding specialized equipment is being deployed to conduct air monitoring in the area.

“CSX is in close contact with the Rockcastle county emergency teams as they continue to assess the situation and we appreciate their swift response. We will work together with the local authorities to secure the area and safety is our top priority as we develop a recovery plan.”

At least they're not complete bastards.

And nothing will change to prevent the next derailment from happening.
Do we really know why any of these have been happening lately? Is it crumbling infrastructure? Is it operator incompetence? Is safety being overlooked in favor of profit? Is it intentional sabotage? Is it domestic terrorism? Is it glowie CIA shit? Is it the Russians? Israelis? Chinese?

It's bad if these have been intentional, but it's even worse if it's just a sign of our slow decline into incompetence as a country. Everything just runs worse, is shittier, and never gets better because people don't know how old shit works anymore and we can't figure out how to replicate the success of the past

Corporations have to maximize profit, so repairing infrastructure and safety just aren't important these days. They're also allowed to mess with everyone's schedule to get the most hours out of them since workers can't go on strike since Democrats in Congress will just veto that. Oh, and they're totally down with diversity, the East Palestine disaster was caused by a black woman diversity hire.

We're fucked.

Quoting the Wikipedia article on the incident (for what it's worth):
Responding to an NTSB preliminary report released on February 13 which said an overheated wheel bearing likely caused the derailment, and that the train had passed through three hotbox sensors prior to the incident, Norfolk Southern representative Jared Hopewell testified that the third sensor had notified the train crew of the overheated bearing, but by then the crew's efforts to stop the train were too late. Constantine Tarawneh of the University of Texas testified that hotbox detectors are "inefficient", and urged railroads to deploy more acoustic bearing detectors; one NTSB official said there are only 16 or 17 such detectors on US railways.[75] The Washington Post reported that there are about 6,000 hotbox detectors spaced every 15 to 30 miles across North American railways; according to Norfolk Southern, they have a network of 1,000 detectors costing $200 million, generating 2 billion readings a year, of which 80 indicate a car requiring attention. The railroad also told The Post that their alarm threshold of 200 degrees[dubiousdiscuss] is among the industry's lowest.[76]

NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy asked why the first local official did not receive information about the train's contents for more than an hour after the derailment when the railroad had apparently been able to notify its own contractors within 14 minutes. Company representatives told her that the document to which she referred gave the time of communication in Central time, corresponding to an hour later in East Palestine. Investigators testified that railcars are required to carry placards indicating what chemicals they're carrying, but that Federal regulations only specify that they withstand normal weather exposure, and that some placards on derailed cars had burned in the extreme heat of the fire.[77] Chief Drabik testified that local jurisdictions lack centralized communication and a 911 command center, and that more hazmat training and federal funding was required for small, mostly volunteer, departments like his own.[75]

Jason Cox of the Transportation Communications Union testified that since 2019, Norfolk Southern has slashed the number of expert car inspectors it employs, and that it had been exploiting a loophole in Federal regulations by having train crews do a 12-point inspection on railcars instead of the 90 to 105-point checks done by an expert carman. He also testified that the defective car had passed through three railyards without being inspected by on-duty qualified personnel.[78] He said that the 12-point inspections are "just supposed to be a stopgap to get the freight car to an inspection point," but they were increasingly becoming the primary method across the industry.[77]
But I'm not specifically seeing where the diversity hire comes into this. Care to clarify for the rest of us?

Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity. If domestic terrorists wanted to make a statement, they would have derailed the train near a much larger town or bulk water supply. If the incident does turn out to be intentionally created, it'll either be by incredibly stupid kids or else some sort of trigger that went off too soon or too early for the real target.

From everything I've read, watched, and discussed with people who are actually in America, there's huge infrastructure issues caused by lack of maintenance and skilled workers over many, many years, and even more massive issues caused by raging managerial and government incompetence and flat out corruption. You can't just outsource everything to India and pocket massive profits forever, at some point laying off the only people who knew which end of the spanner goes where and replacing them with a DEI department is going to jump up and rip your entire fucking buttock off.

This is a cycle that repeats itself all over the fucking world, since infrastructure became a thing: smart people know that <structure> is needed and build it, smarter people realise that they can profit off of <structure>, <structure> is there so long that normal people cease to notice it, scummy grifters show up and realise that if they can cease maintenance of <structure> they can make even more money off of it, smart people tell them that <structure> is going to fail, scummy grifters don't give a shit, <structure> does indeed fail, scummy grifters leave town with massive bags of gold, and everyone else is left to deal with the fact that they have a ton of useless rubble and no <structure>. Rinse and fucking repeat.

Corporations don't have anything to do with infrastructure last time I checked.
This reads like someone asked ChatGPT to write a Republican rambling.

CSX are absolutely complete bastards. This is bare minimum ass covering because of the national holiday. Had this happened on say, November 12th, they may have told the residents "Evacuate at your own cost."

When Maddow was being a complete sperg about train derailments, they started airing ads on MSNBC, her segments ended.

The railroad are never "good guys". They're also an unavoidable backbone that the US will always have to hold their nose over, because without the railroad, there is no country.

No matter the safety measures, things like this can and will continue to happen, same as the chemical facilities going up like fireworks after ignoring X number of safety violations.

As for how/why, the NTSB is actually pretty brutal, they do not look the other way. The question of how the incident will be reported is another question.

Isn't it an issue for government/municipalities to get the infrastructure fixed? In Yuropoor the governments have to work out deals with the companies which pay fees for using the railworks afaik. If a government is retarded like whole Germany is, because they rather invest in new railway communication instead of fixing the railways itself.

I watched a crazy prepper woman called SquirrelTube discuss the first norfolk derailment in detail and theorize a lot about why it derailed (basically a coverup for missing chemical cargo they never recovered)

She's wacko a little but I liked her thorough train vids. She was also pretty invested in the Lahaina fires, when America cared about them. Maybe I'm schizo tho.
