Entire Town Told to Evacuate After Kentucky Train Derailment

A small town of approximately 200 people have been urged to evacuate on the eve of Thanksgiving after a train derailment that has caused concern due to a chemical spill.

In a statement Wednesday night, Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency following the multiple-car train derailment that occurred in Rockcastle County, in eastern Kentucky.

“Response efforts for the incident are ongoing, and local officials are encouraging those in the town of Livingston to evacuate,” the statement said.

“By issuing a state of emergency, we are ensuring that every state resource is available to help keep our families safe,” Gov. Beshear added. “Please stay clear of this area as state, local and CSX officials respond.”

Railroad operator CSX encouraged concerned residents to utilize accommodation the company secured in nearby Mt. Vernon. “In addition to the hotels, the CSX team is working with local restaurants to provide meals for affected residents. CSX is covering the cost for both,” a statement said.

The state’s Emergency Operations Center has also been activated to Level 4 while the state’s Energy and Environment Cabinet Emergency Response Team is also on scene.

CSX confirmed preliminary information indicated at least 16 cars were involved when the train derailed at 2:23 p.m.

Of those 16 cars, two molten sulphur cars had been breached and caught fire.

“When molten sulphur burns it is known to release sulphur dioxide,” CSX said, adding specialized equipment is being deployed to conduct air monitoring in the area.

“CSX is in close contact with the Rockcastle county emergency teams as they continue to assess the situation and we appreciate their swift response. We will work together with the local authorities to secure the area and safety is our top priority as we develop a recovery plan.”

These trains derail in these little shitty towns because the companies who run them are allowed to run them at crazy speeds and running lengths they shouldn't. Between the elevation changes and this bend in the pic attached. They probably just came in to hot trying to move to much right before the holiday.

What intresting about livinsgton is you can see two other sets of tracks that terminate. One that was to run parallel with the main line and one that looked to merge to some sort of old rail yard/inustrial depot. The railroad and freight companies already killed the town years ago.

Terrorism would be cool cause at least that's a story given the overall arc with the derails. But it truly just is a mixture of bad operating procedures and corporate greed.

Ok, sulphur dioxide, not as bad as it could be. A decent poison, but nothing special. Can displace oxygen and suffocate in sufficient concentration. Will cause absolutely fantastic levels of acid rain in the region if enough of it is put into the atmosphere, causing widespread damage to plant life and damage to manmade structures through degradation.

Overall, not great, but much less severe than any of the other recent spills. The vinyl chloride spill was far, far more dangerous.

Do we really know why any of these have been happening lately? Is it crumbling infrastructure? Is it operator incompetence? Is safety being overlooked in favor of profit? Is it intentional sabotage? Is it domestic terrorism? Is it glowie CIA shit? Is it the Russians? Israelis? Chinese?

It's bad if these have been intentional, but it's even worse if it's just a sign of our slow decline into incompetence as a country. Everything just runs worse, is shittier, and never gets better because people don't know how old shit works anymore and we can't figure out how to replicate the success of the past

I have been wondering this myself as well. We know the vinyl chloride incident was caused by them being cheap assholes with inspection. I will be interested to see what caused this one.

All these accidents, recent close calls on flight collisions and other stuff reminds me of all the disasters happening at the end of the soviet union:

Basically the system is collapsing so most of the people who should be keeping this joke going are either unwilling or unable to keep it together.

Corporations don't have anything to do with infrastructure last time I checked.
This reads like someone asked ChatGPT to write a Republican rambling.
The rail infrastructure is maintained by the railroads that own the track. And its not neglected. The current rate of rail maintenance is the highest its ever been. Because the tracks are so valuable.

But the current amounts of rail traffic and rail tonnage is also the highest its ever been.

Most accidents these days come from either a failure of a rail car or a moron trying to beat the train at a crossing.

The maintenance and age of some rolling stock is an issue. So much freight is moving by rail that cars are kept in use longer than they should. And the complex chains of ownership of individual cars can sometimes leave maintenance gaps.

There was nothing that could have stopped this from happening. Pete Buttgay needed his maternity leave. Spending time with your kidnapped AIDs baby you sodomize daily is more important than this nation's infrastructure collapsing.

It’s a damn shame, Livingston is a nice little town with some nice hiking trails in the mountains around it. I’ve been through there a few times. Idk what’s to blame for these derailments in these small towns. Competency and greed is the trend rn with most infrastructure companies.

that last derailment

derailments are not uncommon and happen dozens of times a month all over the country.
The reason the stories trail off after derailments is because they are a reality that nobody likes looking at. Our entire culture right now is based on never taking responsibility, and a train derailment comes with a ton of "Yes, you fucked up. You."

So whatever came from that last derailment is that just water under the bridge?
There are more pressing concerns for our government, like how many more billions in "aid" to send to Ukraine or Israel. Or what the latest charges they can bring against Trump.
The companies own the rail lines, not the government. That's why NS had trains up and running two hours after the controlled release in EP, until the EPA stepped in and said "Dafuq, now?"

EP is recovering, still. NS is no longer paying temporary relocation fees, but it has been about 11 months, so that makes sense. They are, however, still working on cleanup. The main road into town just reopened about three weeks ago. Several companies along that toad got bought out completely. NS is paying anyone who can't get fair market value for their houses the difference. There is going to be a new park, with completely redone swimming pool. They're trying to make it right, it seems. I think they've spent about $1 billion, so far, in an attempt to make amends.
NS is doing a half-hearted attempt at "remediation". What they neglect to tell anyone is that the "treated and perfectly safe to drink" water is being transported to other rural communities for disposal despite the protests of locals.

Yeah. We all know that. The locals should be pissed at Buckeye Brine. ETA- On top of NS, of course. This shit is all their fault to begin with.

It's always the rural communities that get fucked like this. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
To be perfectly fair, not many cities have steep and curving railroads through them that trains can blow through at 70mph.
