Neo Retro Shooters - The intricacies of the renaissance of the "genre" known for gibs, quips and labyrinths.

IMO boomer shooters should be taking the gameplay of old games like Doom/Quake/Blood and delivering them in an updated package with modern graphics and other modern bells and whistles. The biggest pitfall boomer shooters tend to fall into is in also trying to ape the graphics and technical limitations of the old-school shooters, not just the gameplay. Dusk was the worst offender for this, although it was a very fun game and mostly what I was looking for the
graphics were frankly crap, somehow managing to look worse than the 20+ year old games it was paying homage to.
Well wish sort of granted?

Dusk was so good.

The new official Quake expansion “Dimension of the Machine” was also super fun.

Not really a Boomer shooter but if you like old school FEAR style action, check out Trepang2. In a similar vein, if your missing Max Payne type games check out El Paso Elsewhere.

Trepang2 has very good gun play, best I have seen in a very long time. Although it made me feel quite old when the edgelord reviewers said it was a "throwback to 2000 shooters". I didn't really like FEAR, but the comparison is fair.

I've said this before in a previous thread but I've never been a fan of Serious Sam's gameplay and it's become this strange inbred flanderized element that tons of wannabe retro shooters have copied ...despite none of the traditional shooters (Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem etc.) playing anything like it.

It was a step in the wrong direction. The hype for the first one was near fanatical I remember getting it and 5 minutes after waiting for it to get good was just WTF. Whole thing is like some strange polished turd modeled after the late 90s tsunami of quirky win9x/DOS shooters hoping to be the next Redneck Rampage.

Thanks for the info! I played Dusk and thought I loved it unreservedly, but on revisiting it early this year I realized that for all my appreciation of the level design I disliked the graphics: all my initial enjoyment came from the novelty of exploration. I dropped the replay before getting through the first level.

With this, a second playthrough looks properly appealing.

Doesn't it have heavy tranny involvement?
No, but Hakita is very supportive of troons and whatever weird fan shit they make for his game.

i think the dev added buttplug compatibility and keeps making porn jokes so he'll definitely troon out in the coming months
Pretty sure he would've done so if he really wanted to already.

Every highly praised Early Access game is a meme, in a few months the dev can shit out a update that drastically changes the game's formula and newcomers will look back to all that praise with confusion.
I also can see people looking back to other Neo Boomer Shooters (Ion Fury, Cultic and even Dusk) with good eyes, Ultrakill gives me the feels that will be a game "that happened" for most people.
