Carson got his start early enough that he was up and coming when I was still in the bubble. They didn't really go after him too hard, other than a general "look at this dumb nigger who got given a doctor's degree by his betters and then bit our hands" sort of vibe. Shit like grousing if he ever said something that disagreed with THE SCIENCE and a reminder that unlike Neil deGrasse Tyson having a medical degree just meant Mr. Carson knew how to sew people up, not have a valid opinion on climate science or the ethics of tricking little timmy into cutting his white devil dick off so his mommy could brag on insta about it.

I have no doubt at all if Carson ever had a significantly against-brand message while also becoming anything more than an occasional annoyance on Fox News they'd turn on him hard, but at least back then, the idea of turning on a "poor misguided black who was tricked by the conservatives into voting against his own interest" was enough to keep the lynch mob at bay. Of course nowadays they are MUCH more willing to drop the mask becuase they realized they own Blacks in America and don't even have to try anymore.
