What does Opera even do differently than the myriad of browsers available? Is there any legit reason to use it over Firefox or literally anything that isn't Chrome?
It used to be great up until Opera 12, and then they switched engine removing all the features that made Opera, Opera. Those in the know switched to Vivaldi which is made by the OG developers of Opera, and is essentially the real Opera.

I have the same reaction to finding out that people use Opera as when I find out that there are still McAfee users out there.
I know I'm late, but more and more people use Opera because they had the same market strategy as discord to advertise to Gaymers and now with that Opera GX became big, not as big as Chrome, but def on par with Firefox in marketshare. No 1 uses the other Opera.

a browser can't be for "gaming" because one will always consume memory
No idea how this doesn't strike most people as anything other than obvious snake oil. The only way a browser could be especially good for gaming is if it were optimized to play Flash games on sites like Newgrounds and Miniclip or something, and the time that would have been a cool/useful feature ended some time in the Obama administration.

Or if it used a special web engine designed to be light on system resources, a system to turn off GPU acceleration really easily, and possibly a feature to deep freeze the entire browser, ensuring that it doesn't cause stutters when a random JS-loaded poztab decides to use an entire core for 5 seconds or something. These wouldn't be really useful anyway, since modern multi-tasking operating systems are great at running really intensive applications with the occasional tiny CPU spike from other random processes. If only they did have their own browser engine, instead of being another fucking Blink user like >le shill lion, Edge, Vivaldi, and all the others. Not saying Gecko is perfect either...

Tons of people don't even know what a browser is. I'd even say that number is growing, especially due to phone-only plebs.

Odd that I just watched a That Chapter video from the other day and he was shilling Opera.
