Brianna Wu / John Walker Flynt - "Biggest Victim of Gamergate," Failed Game Developer, Failed Congressional Candidate

Anyone have an archive of Bro Team Pill's Twitch stream last night? I really wanted to watch that, but had social obligations.

Wow, fuck revolution 60. Seriously.

I thought I'd do my due diligence and soldier through the fucking thing. There's an impossible 0 second QTE right near the end that blocks you from completing it. There's also a type the word QTE where they put a space at the end of the string just to fuck with you.

Wu didn't test this shit at all before dumping it out. SHE HAD 3 MONTHS OF DOING FUCK ALL, AND SHE NEVER PLAYED THROUGH THE GAME EVEN ONCE.
I played the version a good soul uploaded to TPB earlier today and was so bored after about an hour I couldn't continue playing. I've played some real shit to completion previously but this is on another level entirely. It's a shame really, I feel like some of the game mechanics could have been interesting in the hands of an even vaguely competent developer (although I'm told that the combat system is directly ripped from Megaman battle network, which I haven't played personally.) As it stands though it doesn't even have the so-bad-it's-laughable quality, which is kind of the biggest insult of all honestly.

In one of the streams, I saw a QTE for a special attack in combat that said "LIGHTING CUT." I assume it was supposed to be "lightning cut," partially because the last thing John would ever cut from this game would be the lighting. Then aside from the typo, the streamer failed the QTE several times in the middle, so I wonder whether he was trying to type "lightning" or if he was typing "lighting" but the underlying game code was actually "LIGHTNING" so it didn't count as correct.

She had ONE YEAR of doing fuck all to at least play through her piece of shit game. As said a few times in the various Wu topics and then confirmed by someone earlier today, this port has been "done" since January 2015.

Welp, here's my opinion on the new QTEs: they made the game worse. The swap from mashing the space bar, typing in words and pressing the arrow keys does not do the game any favors. Notable games like the reboot of Tomb Raider had the decency to put the buttons for the QTEs relatively near where your fingers would be anyways so you didn't have to move your hands all across the keyboard, but this is an example Revolution 60 didn't follow and it makes every QTE session far more frustrating than it needed to be. Unless you've played through the segment before, you have absolutely no idea whether to be ready to type, masturbate the spacebar or go for the arrow keys until it actually appears on screen and you realize your hands are in the wrong place.

I will admit this: it ran without crashing and all performance issues were gone. That said, this is a tower and not a phone, so I'm skeptical it was optimization and more likely a case of simply throwing a lot more power at it.

Oh god yes. I spelt that wrong 3 times before I noticed. Jesus.

This is the part that absolutely slays me about the R60 release.

At this point it's pretty fucking clear that the launch was a financial disaster of proportions I didn't even think were possible. OK, R60 was always dreadful, and people were always going to be unhappy with it, but Brianna's decision to spend more than two years monkeying with the lighting just absolutely killed any chance of them making a cent from the game. Maria had the port done in January of '15 when Brianna was still enjoying her 15 minutes of fame. If they'd just released the thing, the Kotaku/Polygon/Paste axis would have been all over this shit. They'd get so many sympathy bucks from men with money and white guilt.

Ironically it was Brianna's urge to make more acceptable to the virtue signalling crowd that ultimately doomed it.

That's just it, though - as we've figured out, absolutely nothing about the game has changed from its iOS form, other than the addition of shitty PC controls ala typing of the dead and a few extra cut scenes that had to be included as separate DLC. Given how we now have the game code in our possession and discovered the hilariously basic structure of game flow, to the point the fucking iOS paywall bullshit is still lingering around as dead code, I suspect the 'new scenes' being sold separately was a pitiful attempt to show there was in fact an 'upgraded' version.

Additionally, if it is true and the game has in fact been ready in its current state for almost 18 months, then that fucking patreon and all the 'updates' on Twitter (which we suspected to be bullshit or at least proof Wu was trying to make busywork) were a cover for the former purely as a honeypot to scam people out of money monthly, with the falling amounts suddenly followed by a large spike of money being people taking their money out and Wu/puppets putting more money in to try and keep up appearances. The long game with patreon has proven unsustainable (very likely at least over 50% of it is Wu and Wu shills by now) and to avoid getting their ass sued off they are forced to put up the barely functional PoS game. The one stroke of 'luck' was that WOW: Legion and DE : MD released this time after the dates were locked in months ago, giving a smokescreen for R60 to be released when Wu figured most of the gaming community on their ass would not notice.

But the farms are vigiliant as always.

Additionally, Wu losing gargantuan amounts of money is nothing new - the old SOCCON company animation/radio show studio thing back in the early 2000's cost the Flynt parents $200K base investment on top of burned tuition money from the college semesters AND no doubt having funded that ambien addiction around the same time (figures never disclosed because who wants their failure of a son to tarnish their legacy by being a white boy druggie?). And nothing was produced by that studio before the parents forced its dissolution.

GSK has been nothing but Soccon Round 2, double the thrown away money ($400K just for the original app incarnation) on what is effectively the exact same bullshit with even less effort (funny how 60s sci-fi means neon colored random geometry can pass for 'artistic direction' here). However, on the other hand the fact the game got released - twice - means Holiday and all those other unoriginal characters finally got a mass media release if nothing else, and so explains why Wu is jumping right back into being a journalist which is what they tried to do before ever creating the Soccon/EE/R60 nonsense-verse.

I was thinking back to all the speculation we had about how R60 was likely bugged beyond belief and Wu was dumb enough not to keep backups, but apparently Wu managed to put something FUNCTIONAL out on Steam anyway.

The all caps is intentional, that's not the same as saying it runs well, because it does not despite some minor technical improvements that @Jaimas noted.

If anything, Wu (in a world where they are competent) should have had a closed beta where keys were handed out to beta testers, fixed as many issues before release, then dropped this crap on the public, because while it's not exactly in obvious alpha build game, it's barely above mid-development beta build quality.

Worse, based on what we know of the file structure and programming, Wu could not have known shit about how it all really functioned on a technical level, especially since it was a chimera of various Unreal blueprints with super bloated classes (which certainly explains the bad frame rate and load times), and the non programming parts weren't much more competent save for some minor visual eyecandy add-ons, which is like spritzing air freshener over a cow patty: it'll smell marginally better for a little bit, but you can still notice the bad attempt to hide the smell of shit.

It still managed to function to game completion for those whose bothered to get that far, but considering all the glitches and issues even for those who magically avoided all the show stopping issues reported by others, it would have been better had this been bugged beyond saving, as what we got is still a crude embarrassment.

You give Wu too much credit. They provably don't understand game theory or even basic computer hardware concepts. They don't even enjoy playing games if there is actual potential to be challenged or even lose - hence things like the final fantasy overlevel which somebody said probably one-shot that boss so early in the game.

It is a piece of shit game, R60, but it looks 'better' and tells the same uninspired dredge of a narrative, that's literally all Wu ever cared about. It is as hollow of legitimate quality as its 'proud parent' is of a soul.

Being serious here, I would have volunteered to be a beta tester for John. Not that I see a ton of bugs in the streams I've watched, but more to provide some constructive criticism on the gameplay mechanics, story, etc. I do think the game could have been revamped and made better for the Steam release, but it's all for naught now.

Edit: @Lowtax , you are slaying it. Thanks for the hilarious stream and review.

Who needs beta testing when you could bribe the shit out of 'respected' game journalism people to give it awards despite being an unplayable shitpile? Wu never needed the game to be good, it just needed to look good enough before being able to unload it like a time bomb ready to blow.

Yup. Media created by lolcows is always fun to eviscerate, especially when you just know every journo hack this side of polygon will be giving it rave reviews under fear of being declared part of the vile GG rape conspiracy.

I honestly look forward to seeing how the game will be spun as good by the usual publications.

I doubt any journalism outlets will want to cover R60.5, Wu certainly wanted to release it without pomp and circumstance as would be expected because Wu wants to BURY this shit game and all the stigma they accumulated with it. The same way they buried John Walker Flynt before doing exactly the same thing they did with the animation studio.

This is a good point.

The QTE sequences that labor the cutscenes are:

Tap space repeatedly to move a circle.
Press any button when a moving slide is in a specific area on its slider.
Spell a phrase.
Press down and hold, then while pressing tap a specific directional key (usually up, can be left or right).

So imagine doing that right now: going from tapping the space key with your left hand, to taking both hands to spell out "WU LADS", and then moving your right hand to do this weird as fuck key combination.

It's almost intentionally frustrating, like a Bop It.

Well, i've been playing R60 for a bit and it's pretty much a boring mess, to the point of trying to make the game look slighty more "tolerable" is more fun than the game itself:

It still looks like a disco nightmare, but it shouldn't make your eyes bleed so much, i'll try to see if i can do more to "fix" the game.

Also, if you don't want to see the intro everytime you start the game, replace the "Startup.bik" file inside the Movies folder with a copy of "UE3_Logo.bik".

It does look better with the colored glow subdued, but it needs a complete rework from the ground up to be even remotely decent.

And I guess that's what bugs me the most about this whole thing. It could've been a better game than what it was. You're exactly right though, when you have shills writing for you, you let things like quality and fun gameplay slide to the wayside.

If I was redesigning the game for PC, I'd probably replace the combat in its entirety with quick-fire, time-limited "choices" you had to make- say some grunt busts through a wall and looks like he's about to throw one of those disco-lighting grenades at you- you have 2 seconds to decide whether to duck for cover, throw one of your entirely interchangeable comrades on it or shoot back. Miss the QTE and you stand there and get whacked.

Okay, @Jaimas has spent innumerable hours working on the BWu article, which has paid off. The Lolcow Wiki article is just shy of being as long as Wikipedia's main article on Adolf Hitler, and it's the FOURTH most prominent neutral google result for her name, above fucking brietbart and just below her own personal website. That to me is absolutely staggering.

But I think Jaimas needs some help, especially with 1) structure, 2) reduction of fluff, 3) neutrality of tone. I'll give you an example. I've cleaned up the very first paragraph of the article as an example.

New:

I did the following.

1. Tried to hit as many points as possible to give people an understanding of who this person is without fine tooth combing it. To me, the most significant element is not that Brianna Wu tweets a lot, it's that she involves herself in drama. The best example of that IMO is how she wrangled a cripple into the national spotlight to accuse him for being some sort of cyber terrorist. That's pretty fucking amazing.

2. Reduced fluff. Every word serves a purpose. There's a lot of purely editorial issues, probably because Jaimas writes so much information that he doesn't really have time to properly spruce up text. The best example of this in what I've given is the "by-all-accounts". Not only does that phrase mean literally nothing from an objective standpoint, it appears twice in consecutive sentences (which is poor writing), and it's also inconsistent. The first instance is hyphenated, the second is not.

3. I tried to remove bias as much as possible. Lolcow Wiki should be fairly neutral. Sarcasm quotes, direct insults, etc all betray the trust of the reader. No one doing a casual google search for Brianna Wu who finds this article is going to read past the first paragraph or even skim through the rest of the article because they're going to assume it's written by someone with a grudge. If you really want to harm someone with a LCW article, you do it by being honest, straightforward, and sincere. It's an encyclopedia of failures, not ED.

But furthermore the rest of the summary area is preposterously gargantuan.

Adolf Hitler: http://i.imgur.com/Ql6fcvi.png
Brianna Wu: http://i.imgur.com/mqlSGVp.png

Literally, the introductory area for Adolf Hitler is smaller than Wu's. I know for a fucking fact that Wu is not as accomplished as Mein Furhrer and I find this insulting. A summary should be just that: a summary. "Wu did this, and this, and this." It should be 3, 4 paragraphs tops for someone like Brianna Wu.

And finally, please, turn all the [[pipelining|sentences which are entirely contained within pipelines to citations]]. When your comment is a link to something else on the wiki, that isn't a link. A link is saying [[Adolf Hitler|Chancellor of Germany during World War II]] -- you're linking to something. When you are citing an entire stated fact, you want to use proper references.

I mean honestly, there's tons of interest in this thread right now and in BWu right now because of the game. There's a ton of information in that article but that's the problem. It reads like a brick and Jaimas really enjoys garnish and superfluous in writing -- which works great for a forum post or short story, not so much for an encyclopedia.

Thank you, Null. I appreciate any help.

Even I will openly acknowledge shit's a mess. Years of wiki writing has fucked me up in a lot of ways.

Hoping to put up Episode 3 of the Revolution 60 run later tonight. I also need to hammer out an actual review to put on Steam later suggesting you get it because it's basically Birdemic in Video Game form.

I swear on Beelzebub and all his little imps that if she comes out and says this shit is a Psycho Mantis typoe deal where you're forced to switch input methods and that it's deliberate coding, I'll track her down and force her to play through her own game.
First thing I thought of as well.

And you know that's John's answer.
