I actually need to push back here, because this is the sort of nebulous grey area that is actually important to understand. What exactly is the 1st amendment? Specifically the "Speech" clause. Not the actual text. The actual "idea" that the text is trying to get at. In my mind, the idea that the right of the people to freely express their political opinion and publicly petition the government for redress of grievance, and to otherwise publicly speak to persuade political action from their peers cannot be criminalized.I don't agree with the protestors at all and frankly wish they were taken out by an 18 wheeler, but they should go back and protest there every night. Fuck the government trying to infringe on first amendment rights.
Which brings us to this issue. A Falafel shop. Being protested over a war in Israel. Because its run by Jews. In Philadelphia.
How exactly, is the Falafel shop responsible for what is happening in Gaza? More importantly, how does protesting the Falafel shop in Philadelphia effect the political situation in Israel?
Not one bit. I may hate what New York is exporting to my neck of the woods in the form of progressive politics, but I'm not gonna take my friends down to the local New York Style Pizzeria to protest Eric Adam's latest insanity. For one thing Eric Adam's won't give a shit, and for the other, wtf is the Pizzeria going to do to get what I want? All I am doing is making a mess and ruining uninvolved peoples day.
That is not the exercise of a right. That is the abuse of a right. Its not acceptable. If these protestors have a problem with what Israel is doing, instead of threatening to burn down the Falafel shop, maybe go over to the Israeli consulate instead. That would actually be justifiable use of the right.
