Twitch has decided to cease operations in South Korea on February 27 2024.

There was a livestream today that gave more detail as to why and what will happen. Changes include:
- No longer being able to buy bits or Twitch Turbo
- Maximum resolution reduced to 480p, from an already limited 720p. Not even if you use VPNs
- Can no longer monetize on Twitch

Why: Twitch claims that operating costs have gotten too expensive in Korea due to expensive internet/bandwidth fees, which they claim to be 10 times higher than that of other countries.

Phonefagging right now so if more people can get details in it would be appreciated.
Imagine being reduced to expensive CRT resolutions in the year of our lord 2023

In Korea companies have to pay ISPs for data usage, this caused issues before for Netflix when Squid Games surged traffic.
AfreecaTV is the main Korean streaming site, Twitch didn't get a foothold before someone else took over, so they can't pull a YouTube and operate at a loss to maintain #1 status, they never had it there.

BEST KOREA DPRK LIVESTREAM W

This is unironically do a lot of damage to titty streaming. One of the biggest demographics for titty streamers is South Korea, where porn is effectively illegal outside of very specific contexts, so having some streamer you can pay to wiggle her cleavage was their main release alongside idols in short-shorts and webtoons about cuckolding. If they cease operations in India and in most Arabic countries then it'll basically die off since they're the main financiers.

One can only imagine the amount of pain/joy if the same thing happened in America. Though, in the case of SK, I think will look at it as the second coming of today’s America through the livestreamer/influencer lens.

Either way, this will set up more than just a few changes, as far as how much Twitch will be willing to go to just ceasing operations in the second Korea.

Thank god. Horny Korean gooks have done more for Skyrim modding than every other country combined and we don’t want them getting distracted.

For 10 years we were told cloaks had to look like caterpillars on your back but the second the gook MMOs started pushing out women that looked like a pair of drapes fell into a blender they got that shit down pat.

At this rate, elder scrolls 6 will have revolutionary physics and each strand of hair simulated because they couldn’t see the anime girl npc stream.

For those of you who weren’t there to watch a bunch of repressed happas style on Bethesda, it’s the “Box of Scraps” scene from Ironman over at zenimax pretty much 24/7. I truly fear the day they discover women are real.

It's illegal but dosent actually stop anyone or things from circulating. Same with tatts people have other ways of disributing. in the case of porn its though other social media and with censored faces and is almost exclusively solo stuff

Actually a year ago the South Korean government told ISPs they can unblock porn sites.

Beyond that softcore is legal in South Korea it's just like Japan it's illegal to show actual genitals which is why you can see some really explicit korean Mangas.

Fun fact in Korea streamers are called BJs (broadcast jockey) meaning the proper term for a titty streamer in Korea is BJ girl.

Female streamers are called precisely 여캠 , combination of 여자 (girl) and 캠 which is short for 카메라 (camera). The term for titty streamers is 벗방, combination of 벗다 (remove, in this sense clothing) and 방송 (broadcast).

Twitch has decided to cease operations in South Korea on February 27 2024.

There was a livestream today that gave more detail as to why and what will happen. Changes include:
- No longer being able to make transactions related to Twitch (donating bits/money, subscribing, buying Twitch Turbo) with all recurring payments being stopped after the shutdown date.
- Maximum viewing resolution reduced to 480p, from an already limited 720p. Not even if you use VPNs.
- Korean streamers can no longer monetize on Twitch.

This effectively limits the average Korean viewer to just viewing, chatting, and using channel points (redeems and predictions). VODs, clips, moments have been disabled earlier this year.

Edit: some more details added
This is bizarre. Bandwidth surely cannot be the reason. The Internet is a network of networks, if South Korea's bandwidth is too expensive, just don't do edge caching there. Cloudflare had the same issue in Australia and their solution was to pump free-tier traffic via the US for ISPs that refuse to join IXs.

This is retarded.

I don't think anyone can appreciate how sane of a decision this is until they've actively had to deal with South Korean internet providers or general network politics.

If you're ever in a situation where you actively do want a Korean audience for some reason, just host it in a nearby Asian country that doesn't completely screw you over, allow the Koreans to access it and inevitably when the big baddy government tries to threaten you, tell them to fuck off until they stop bothering or outright block your services from being accessed over Korean networks.

ISP's in South Korea can bill companies like Amazon/Twitch for the additional traffic sent to their networks. Netflix tried to evade this by also turning off their content delivery in South Korea so that the traffic flowed to different PoPs in different countries, but they still got billed a fuckload of money by the Korean ISP's.

This is not a normal transit or paid peering thing when it comes to cost, it's an additional cost South Korean ISP's can charge companies like Amazon/Twitch, Netflix or other streaming platforms. IP transit costs in South Korea are comparable to other countries in their neighborhood, it's just this additional charge the ISP's are allowed to lay on platforms that is fucking them over.
