Cheap to care for, easy to feed, easy to care for,bwon't live long enough for their death to hurt, aren't relateable enough to develop an intense attachment to. Seems perfect for kids.
Why don't people get their kids cockroaches or earthworms as beginner pets?

Well, because learning to grieve and deal with the loss of a loved one is an important lesson in a sense. Plus the feeling of responsibility is greater with something "relatable".

No, man. You gotta capture the roaches that are already there, and turn them into pets.
Although if you're going to give your kid a roach, it better be a cool roach. Like a hissing roach, those are pretty nice.

In elementary school, we had a pet millipede. Those are cool.
Also, it was be neat to have a pet caterpillar and watch it grow up into a butterfly. Now I’m realizing that I don’t see as many butterflies in the world as I did when I was a child.

Wouldn't earthworms be hard to see? An ant farm lets a kid see a cross-section, but pet earthworms would just be a cubic foot of dirt with the theory of worms in it. Maybe a Mason jar.
When I was a kid we had a slug terrarium with big banana slugs from California. You could see the slugs pretty well but we had to scrape the glass clean a lot.
