I wish these whales went extinct instead of the real ones.

The games industry created them when they incorporated mobile shit into it. Get rid of the source, the problem is gone. Even on mobile, microtransactions were always garbage. Old nokia green-n-black screen phones came bundled with tetris or snake so they never had this issue. Neither did the Java games on flip-phones which you always had to pay for in full before playing them. Once smart phones became a thing, that's when shit went tits up.

I don't mind the existence of gacha whales in Japanese mobile games if it means they contribute in the budget of console games like it happened for Granblue Fantasy (Versus and Relink), Fate (Samurai Remnant, Tsukihime remake and Witch Night), and Umamusume (Party Dash). I'm hoping there is a future game project for Blue Archive as a full strategy title.

I think aggressive pricing has to also do with it. Sony went and jacked up the price of the PS5 when you should be discounting it over time. Meanwhile, I've seen promotions for the Series X for $400, even $350 once.

It's even more aggravating in Japan where the PS5 Slim (soon-to-be default model) has reached twice the price of a Switch OLED, in addition of all the Playstation accessories and peripherals getting more expensive too. And unlike elsewhere, Steam Decks can be found in Japanese retailers, with the 256GB LCD model being 5,000 yen less expensive than a PS5 Slim.



Makes me wonder how the first trimester of 2024 will play out for Playstation over there, but I do not expect a turnabout.

Not even that, there was a golden era of a few years where smartphone gaming was basically Flash 2.0. A lot of small but creative games that were usually 99 cents but generally no more than $2.99, with many of them having a free demo. No microtransactions, just simple, fun, arcade-style games. Larger companies got in on it too, like Namco making a Pac-Man themed Doodle Jump clone with great music and visuals, or Genesis games getting mobile ports for a dollar each. EA made a bunch of mobile versions of board games with lively presentation. PopCap made enhanced ports of their PC games with HD visuals. Sega ported Chu Chu Rocket because why not?

Then Apple made the braindead fucktarded brave decision to remove 32-bit support through an iOS update, making all of those games unplayable unless you happen to have a very old phone lying around. And don’t think you can just use Android instead; most of these games were made before Android even existed and were never ported.

Mobile gaming used to be genuinely great, then it didn’t just die, it was killed. If a classic iOS emulator is ever made for a modern phone, it’ll change my life.

TBF there was (and still is) a demand for "big" games on a go. In early days of mobile gaming big studios tried to port their major titles to phones. Some of these ports were successful (GTA), some were not (Dead Space). Marketing PSP as a platform for "real" games wasn't a bad business decision.
Also most of these early mobile ports are now available on PS Vita lol.
