The operations on the Dnipro never made much sense. They seemed to have been originally planned to have happened in conjunction with a successful offensive further east. Rather than reconsidering the operation based on the lack of success at Robotyne, they seemed to decide to just do it for the sake of doing it.
Contrary to the New York Times article, there was no hope of any advance doing any harm to Russian supply lines in the area. Because of course the area is at the western end of the Russian positions in the south. Its at the end of the supply lines.
The managed to get a couple battalions work of men over the river at Krynky. But they can't concentrate force because the supply of everything comes by boat. They also can't protect the area of the river crossing enough to do anything other than boat supply. The Ukrainians created a sort of kill-box for themselves in Krynky. They can't advance and they get hit by fire from three sides.
I think the reason that the articles have started appearing is that with the winter weather, things went from bad in the positions along the Dnipro to unsurvivable. Its too cold and wet to do much of anything.
They should have pulled back across the Dnipro several weeks ago. But the dedication of the Ukrainians to killing their own men wouldn't allow it. The other story commonly told is that the training of Ukrainian Marines no longer includes teaching them how to swim.

Speedboats have to haul ass up this winding river network, in pitch black lighting conditions, against FLIR equipped FPV drones and Lancets just to make it to the town to deposit or withdraw troops. There was a point in time where a small skirmish raid like this would have been worthwhile during the summer offensive to frustrate and pin Russian reserve troops into dealing with them, but that opportunity is long over and like all Ukrainian military operations, they've long outlived their purpose or usefulness and its become mere political grandstanding instead of reasoned military thinking.
