It's sad really. I love fate, but when I bring it up, it comes with baggage that even it decided to ditch early on, but still has to be explained.
That Type Moon was reluctant to include adult content in F/SN is a bit of a mis-nomer. Nasu and the others always intended from the outset for it to be an 18+ game. It just so happened that how it turned out in the final product was so haphazard that taking it out for console releases was dead simple. Add to that, a little game called ToHeart selling a million-billion copies on the playstation by ditching it's adult content and setting a precedent that a lot of other companies would follow, and you have the perfect storm for a game like Fate entering a more mainstream market and becoming the giant it is today.

I mean haphazard is the understament of the year. It's not even hot. It's very uncomfortable, and has you laughing as you pound your mouse to skip it. Nasu can't write sex scenes

Neither could a lot of people back then. Key being another infamous example. Their old artist, Itaru Hinoue, once said she thought of all the characters she designed as "being kind of like her daughters", which is a cute sentiment until you think about it for more than half a second.

Yeah... really believe it or not, I don't need to jack off to enjoy a anime PowerPoint. I'd rather just have fun with the story. F/sn on its own is a absolutely epic tale. I don't need to know that Toshaka is into anal

I went cold turkey on porn in general about 6-ish months ago. Now I'm just left here with all this knowledge I'd rather not have. How'd you think I figured out there was an all ages version of Amakano to begin with lol?

Good for you man :). When you step back, media in general is filled with porn. I'm not talking cleavage on a outfit, I mean just... porn. It doesn't even make sense why it's in there. Hell I don't even care if the characters "have intimate relations", just cut to black. It's way cuter that way. I don't want to read the writer stumble around the awkward act of sex.

'preciate it bud. It's really weird. As a teenager, "sex sells" was something you heard a lot and sort of expected. It's definitely still there, but you also have a very vocal crowd of people that piss and shit themselves at the most soft-core bullshit imaginable, which is something I couldn't really ever see myself doing. Bisque Doll comes to mind, that had twitter trannies up in arms trying to gun for it.

I know. They're the same people btw that tell you the wonders of the sexual revolution and shit like that. Its like pick one.

I don't care if a anime waifu is hot, it's just, what story are you trying to tell. If you want to write a porno, write a porno. If you aren't I'd rather not have to break my mouse to skip the obnoxious sex scenes in your game that do nothing for the plot. Its about balance.

True. True. It's better that everything go in it's proper place. In the case of Type Moon, using Magic Semen to let Shirou create a pocket dimension is definitely a few steps too far. But, in the case of stuff like Highschool Romance VNs, I've definitely seen it... not entirely break the story. Even then, I usually just prefer to soak in the more simple moments of intimacy.

Mana transfer is the ultimate meme... but on your point. Can you write a sex scene well? Sure... you better be a very good writer. I like writing. Ive written books. Sex scenes are nightmare mode. It is best to avoid it unless you are SURE you can nail it. Otherwise it'll end up like fate and get laughed at.

It's definitely less cringe if you just go full degen with it rather than trying to tie it into the narrative in some big dramatic way like White Album or something. At least with smut, you know why it's there.

Master Detective Archives: Rain Code was done by the danganronpa team.

Both AI Somnium Files games are "find a killer", but done by the Zero Escape creator. First one is fine, second one is not.
i played that a few days ago, was okay. just wasnt as good

whats wrong with the 2nd one?

At least if it's smut, you're owning it. You aren't tricking me half the VN until sexy mana transfer time. It's honest, which goes a long way

2nd one has a very stupid plot twist, no even stupider, To spoil the twist: the game lets you think that you play as the male detective six years in the past and the girl detective in the present, but really the timelines are mixed, so you play as the male and girl detectives in both the past and present. To do this the girl has to have an older clone, another character is an immortal 12 year old boy, they make Date (first game's protagonist) vanish for six more years with amnesia again, the murderer you spend the whole game looking for is already dead, and more.

If this wasn't so bad, the game doesn't explain the twist to the player naturally like the first Somnium game, it literally pulls the player aside and has a tranny character explain what is going on directly to the player, and glosses over some of the more egregious bullshit.

I assume most of you already know, considering it's the biggest release this month, but the ONE. remake is out on Steam. So far, I really like it. Inoue's artwork has really grown since the 2000s, and as someone who never really went out of his way to read the original, it's really nice to have this... kinda bizarre piece of history accessible to me. The main character is a total psychopath and I kinda love him for it.

Fucking trannies, man. Even jap shit is becoming infected. I really was hoping to enjoy those games but learned they praise troons in the first one, like super obvious pandering.

The writing is also not as good, the plot points are weak, the characters aren't as interesting, the puzzle sequences are braindead and not fun.

The first game was exceptional, really stands out as one of the best games I've played in the last few years. I had high hopes for the sequel but it feels really phoned in

I see. It's funny how the Japanese are the only ones who feel the need to include that stuff out of fear the games won't sell well otherwise, and it seems isolated to VNs. I wonder why they don't feel it's necessary in, say, JRPGs or something too.
It's more that VNs suffer from a lack of a censoring body or regulation. Contrast this with games which always attempt to avoid the Adult Only rating in every region to avoid vendors not stocking, or TV and movies adhering to similar standards. The closest comparison is more literature, with minimal restrictions on what content can be depicted, and personally, I would prefer a billion poorly done sex scenes in VNs if it allows the occasional Saya no Uta or Subahibi.

Merry Christmas Visual Novel thread. Thank you for being the only decent place on the internet to discuss this incredibley niche sub-genre. Seriously, the 4chan thread is just two people screaming about one game each that nobody has any interest in; and the reddit, like every reddit, is completely uninhabitable.
