I think he knew he wasn't, but he just didn't have any idea about how to handle a case like that and get it past an uninterested, low-IQ Texas judge. Probably most of his cases were more like the Eric July case where everyone pretty much agrees to shake hands and get back to business. Vic needed someone who'd actually handled real hammer-and-tongs adversarial cases where they don't all go out for mint juleps afterward.
