If US CPE credits are anything like they are in the UK, they won't be very demanding. Here, it's basically couple of days a year sitting in a room, listening to some judge or eminent lawyer pontificate.

But if you've never really practiced in any significant way, you're never actually going back to it. You'd be maintaining it solely for the status thing of being able to say that you're licenced to practice law, even if you've never actually done it in any meaningful sense.
