I don't even remember being taught about it. I'm sure when it is taught, it's glossed over like you said. It's strange to me how many people will absorb everything they learn in school or from the media and never question it unless they're told to.
This probably depends on when and where your education was. I've learned that the education outside of the East Coast US is...sub par.

I was told the real reason to be against women's suffrage is because it gives an unfair advantage to married men as women tend to vote the same way as their husbands. Honestly, I'm all about giving unfair advantage to married families because all this "found family" shit is bonkers.
That's the fault of TV and movies. They all portray normal women as being able to hold their own and often prevail in fistfights with men. Think of how many movies you see where a normal female protagonist, i.e. not capeshit, gets into a hand to hand combat situation with a guard or the male antagonist or something like that, and they beat the shit out of him with their bare hands. Most people haven't been in a real fight and don't know anyone who has been in a real fight so they have no frame of reference and believe that what they see on TV must be close to reality, since it's portrayed that way so ubiquitously. They're the same sort of people who think knives make swishing noises.
There was an incident where a black tried to rape a female fitness model and though she works out he was able to over power her initially, only getting away because she had more endurance from the weight lifting. A lot of women genuinely don't know how much men hold back (I had a female friend that I would play-wrestle with and held back but she thought she could beat me in a few years. She didn't know how strong I really was until I threw some guy off of the floor.)
Movie fights are funny as hell. A fight between two untrained people would be over in a few minutes since fighting is very tiring. I still remember when Rhonda Rousey challenged Floyd Mayweather to a fight and many people thought she had a chance.
