Steam dropping Windows 7 and Windows 8 Support in 2024 - because of course a game platform is locked to one shitty web browser

I guess so. It isn't Valve's fault really, it's Chromium that's dropping Windows 7. They shouldn't have to roll their own browser engine / redevelop all their shit because Google glue-eaters decided to break compatibility.
I have a feeling it'll just push more people towards Steam on Linux.

Maybe, but the pull of familiarity is very strong. Jumping into an entirely new OS based on entirely different principles with a very different history? That's hard. Using version N+1 of your favorite OS despite having to jump through hoops? Easy. Maybe the retarded shit they're doing to their OS will change that.

I think as many as 20% of Steam users will discover the autism deep in their silly little hearts are compatible with Linux and will give it a try, and maybe 50% of those will keep at it when they inevitably have issues

I see this as a net win overall (except for the whole being forced to use Win10 thing, nothing against Win10 but its just irritating)

Unfortunately due to certain apps I am tied to Windows. However, I must say that grabbing a Steam Deck has enlightened me about how usable Linux can be, so it'll only be a matter of time until I use it more and more as a daily driver.

Knowing how autistic gamers can be I'm sure this is a very reasonable estimation.

Welp, today is the day. I view this requirement of Windows 10+ as a neccessary evil.
I bet if windows 11 doesnt see adopters theyre gonna hire cyberterrorists from Russia or China to conduct an aggregate attack across the world after which theyll sell windows 11 as a solution. Im 95% sure it will happen cause companies are fucking evil. I still use win 7, most network cafes across pajeetland use win 7, hospitals sometimes use win 7 I dont know what the problem is with fucking mycrowhard. I dont want 10, I fucking hate it, chrome still works for me (wikia crashes on first open and some text on wikipedia doesnt load, otherwise its fine), brave still works for me, most software pre 2020 still work properly, most indie games post 2020 work I dont see whats the problem. Its a bit slow as a ton of applications and newer applications weigh on the system a bit but thats it.

Win 10 I can stomach. But if I'm forced to actually go into the straight up downgrade that is 11, that may just be the day I go Linux.
2024 will be the year of the Windows 11 LTSC desktop. Wondering if the Dark Vax-Lord Bill gimps it to keep out the gamers and pyrats.

Well the big day is finally here and I'm actually contemplating triple-booting my SATA drive: Win 7 for golden era , Linux for Internet, and Win10 with literally nothing but my steam for the modern stuff that Linux won't run.

Fuck you, microsloth.

I legitimately thought about switching to a raspberry pi for internet and abandoning Steam entirely but there are a couple titles I really like, and since pirated Win 10 and Ubuntu are free it won't cost my poor ass anything but time.

Befriend Linux. Respect Linux. Roundhouse kick Linux cross-compatibilities into existence. Slam dunk some protocols and macros into Linux repository. Love thy neighbour. Share some code with Linux. Launch Linux into orbit as part of advanced extraterrestial exploration systems. Treat Linux users like human beings. Warn Linux users not to fall into an embrace, extend, and extinguish scheme. Share chipset instructions with Linux users. Stream TV and play video games with Linux users. Invite Linux users to parties. Report Linux to the Nobel foundation. Karate chop Linux misconceptions in half. Give up your seat for pregnant Linux users. Free Linux processes from race conditions. Appreciate Linux. Observe POSIX specification. Eat with Linux users. Judge Linux by its uniqueness rather than comparing it to another system. Dance with Linux users with steel-toed boots. Cremate Richard Stallman in the oven, but only if his family didn't want him to be buried. Dignify Linux. Free software for Linux. Collect Linux garbage to put in the garbage collector. Surgically reconstruct Linux with a compiler. Help old Richard Stallman cross the road. Admire Linux. Slice software patents with a katana.

it would be based if they stopped using chrome, re added support for win 7, and continued to develop steamOS to be a serious competitor to wangblows

also fuck all the niggers who said it was because of security or whatever dumb shit, when it was just about google chrome. the same argument big tech companies always use to steal your freedoms n shiet. what about MUH SECURITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most based thing possible would be if Valve created an entirely new browser engine for Steam that can run on operating systems as far back as Vista.
friendly reminder that everyone who thinks about upgrading to windows 11:

They will scan your HDDs/SSDs legally every second (if you agreed to the ToS) for illegal data and child porn because think of the children, so if you're pirating games, switch to linux.
10 didn't already do this?

Steam always had browser capabilities. I’m probably wrong but won’t that mean the browser capabilities means it’s using the chromium engine?

Hopefully it hasn’t turned into another lazy JavaScript application because all the developers are millennials and don’t know how to learn low level languages.
