Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

I recently discovered this short while searching Cartoon Brew. Reportedly Disney commissioned this from their TV cartoon department as part of a series, gave it a couple of animation festival showings and then kept it locked in their vault - until it ended up on YouTube...

Not exactly Jay Ward, but it's still in that venerable tradition.
This was done by Steve Moore (not the same Steve Moore who directed episodes of The Simpsons mind you) and they totally screwed him over by not releaseing this. It's really a love letter to the rather cooky, zany work that Ward Kimball used to do. The film did get nominated for an Academy Award though, so that's one consolation in all this (aside from it's steller voice cast featuring Garrison Keillor, Michael Richards, Mia Farrow, Don Rickles, Adam West, Fabio, June Foray and Jim Cummings, though he gets such a small role).

There was another such project that was produced for this series of upbeat, modern fairy tales surrounding The Three Little Pigs in a reality TV show a la MTV's "The Real World". That one was nearly twice as long as this.

I don't really see a Ward Kimball influence in this, I admit.

The other one ought to get released, but knowing Disney, they'll keep it next to Uncle Walt and Vivien Leigh's head for the rest of eternity.

(I bet you Michael Richards wishes he had a time machine to keep himself from fucking up...)

EDIT: Speaking of Ward Kimball... I found one of my favorite bits of animation by him.

The animation sequence that starts a couple minutes in after Walt Disney's introduction is all Ward. The part where he parodies a typical pulpy sci-fi story of the time especially is one of the funniest things he ever did.

For me, it's the time machine, it sorta resembles the sort of collage/kinetic paintings and sculptures Ward did that often made no sense at all but they have a purpose. Here's a clip from an old Disney Channel program with him showing off some of 'em...

It's a shame.

:story:

Still his performance in this short pretty much sums up his screw up perfectly with the line "I'M A FAILURE!!!"

I remember this TOO well! I remember tuning into Disney Channel some nights when it came on!

I just watched "how to train your dragon" for the first time. I loved it, it reminded me of the first Star Wars in some ways. I didn't get why they wanted to befriend the dragons but make no effort to find a peaceful solution to the giant beast though.

Please, don't watch "How To Train Your Dragon 2" it really sucks balls. It feels like it takes a dump on the first one!

Hiccup's mom came back and that bugged me a lot!

I agree that particular plot point seemed rushed and weird. I think it was progressive as that type of relative doesn't normally get a big role in adventure movies.

Damn, I remember actually watching episodes of then on YouTube a few months back.

Reminder this also had a second season:
Saturday mornings on ABC used to be kinda retarded back then (when it wasn't the Weekend Specials, Schoolhouse Rock or those other nifty PSAs).

Oh, and this was a thing too!

I loved Hey Arnold. The characters were so well written, it had its up and downs, but mostly the show had great episodes. It's similar to As Told by Ginger, I liked that one too.

After not airing for 10+ years, Nickelodeon finally aired KaBlam! again:

My brother and I loved it growing up, fun memories of the Action League, Prometheus and Bob, and my personal favorite (as evidenced by the recurring theme of my profile pics), Sniz and Fondue. The show (amazingly) has held up quite well.

Wasn't the happy days cartoon the result of Hanna Barbera not being able to make a Doctor Who cartoon.

That's what I heard too. Interesting to see what might've happened if it did happen (hopefully not saddled with a character like "Mr. Cool").

Speaking of Mr. Cool, he came about as one of those last-minute decisions to stick in an animal sidekick in this slop, one artist at H-B, Scott Shaw, submitted this drawing that really didn't look like a dog at all, but as he put it, the love child of Wile E. Coyote and Pogo Possum, apparently, that was the design they picked and had to use for the pooch! I just like spreading this fact!
