He did have that existing condition which thickened the skin on his paw pads, that may have had something to do with it.

In reality, he wasn't Staph's cat, he was her mum's. And she's been desperately ill, and her husband is stretched tissue thin trying to take care of both his wife and his cuckoo child. I wouldn't blame either of them if Peetie had an illness that was missed in all the chaos, or was given too much of the wrong food, or got into some household chemical that he shouldn't have, or has been badly affected by all the stress his caretakers have been under.

If Staph actually gave a flying fuck about him, she'd have concentrated her meager attention on his well-being. Instead, her father is the one taking the poor beastie to the vet and ringing her with the updates. Outstanding.

If I recall correctly, I think they adopted Peetie as an adult cat from a shelter five years ago, I can't remember if she has ever mentioned his age, but I don't think he was 5 years old. I hope she keeps her fat fingers away from his cremains. Give it a day or two and she will get into an epic slapfight and use the 'I'm grieving for my dead cat, I don't need this bullying' card when she's in too deep.

He did have the other health issues, but as soon as I saw "kidney issues" I knew that he was probably done for. Especially in Staph's "care."

My cat has been meowing for food/attention ever since right before I opened this thread. I'll pretend that he's paying his respects to his fallen brethren as I attend to him.
