If it’s true that school shooter in Iowa today was trans, there’s going to be heated discussion in the days ahead about the relationship between trans identity, mental illness, and violence.

I urge those who participate in this discussion to do so carefully and thoughtfully.

Setting aside whether trans ID / gender dysphoria is itself a mental illness, there is ample evidence that people who identify as trans and/or have a GD diagnosis have very high rates of mental health/neurocognitive problems and personality disorders, including externalizing symptoms that can result in violence.

The question is how to understand the relationship between trans ID and these psychiatric problems.

One theory is minority stress: trans people are stigmatized and misunderstood, resulting in psych issues.

Another theory is that trans ID is, at least for some, a maladaptive coping mechanism for psych issues.

It’s no secret that I find the minority stress theory unpersuasive. But we need to be careful about attributing acts of violence to “being trans.” A better explanation is that, at least for some, trans ID and violent actions both arise from unmanaged mental health issues. It’s a subtle but important distinction.


In addition to questions about trans, mental illness, and violence, which are -- as Leor points out -- delicate and tricky to unpick, there are serious concerns about trans as a *subculture* and violence.

Online trans spaces are soaked in violent imagery and rhetoric. This glorification of violence is justified by wildly exaggerated stories about trans persecution, mostly notably the wholly invented claim that we're currently living through a "trans genocide."

I've written about this before, including for @UnHerd: "The truth is that the subculture that has grown up around trans identities too often excuses, legitimises, and even glorifies violence..."

"That includes violence directed at the self — where self-harm and suicide demonstrate sincerity and commitment to trans identity in the face of adversity — and violence directed outward at perceived enemies."

Supposedly responsible 'grownups' and advocacy orgs traffic in phobia indoctrination, too. Rather than reassuring kids that "it gets better" when others don't accept your identity or you have to wait to 18 to transition, far too many adults favor apocalyptic & militant rhetoric.

What's happening here isn't trans genocide: it's trans radicalization. The warning signs are everywhere: grimacing skulls that promise “DEATH BEFORE DETRANSITION,” baseball bats wrapped in barbed wire, torrents of rape and death threats, calls to stomp/mace/kill terfs...

Kids in trans spaces are indoctrinated into irrational fears. For some, these irrational fears isolate them and make them afraid of the outside world.

For others, phobia indoctrination inspires dreams of vengeance.

Research into violent radicalization among Quebec college students found that transgender and gender-diverse youth were at the *highest risk of support for violent radicalization.*

Given the state of the trans subculture, this shouldn't surprise anybody.

Communities that mythologize martyrs recruit martyrs. Communities that glorify vengeance and violence inspire it.

You also get migration between violent subcultures, like the weirdly well-traveled neo-Nazi-to-trans-activist pipeline. Forget 'genderfluid.' Think 'extremism-fluid.'

No sane, responsible community looks or acts like this. We don't know enough yet to say anything useful about what happened today in Iowa. But we know plenty to say that the trans community as a whole has serious radicalization problems.

It's typical incel behaviour, really. Look at the types of guys who idolize the Joker (always the dark edgy versions, never the fun versions), Patrick Bateman, Tyler Durden, and so forth. They're all sociopathic, porn-addicted incels who believe, while in mommy's basement, that they're victims of societal oppression. They want that narrative to be reinforced, even though what's holding them back from their goals -- whether it be academic goals, career goals, or romantic goals -- is their own entitlement, bad attitudes, and unrealistic standards. They want quick, easy money (which is why so many fall for crypto and dropshipping scams) and cry when they have to work for a steady living like everyone else. They get mad when they can't find a woman who has no mature interests and is also willing to bring home a salary, cook, clean, look good, and have porny sex at the drop of a hat. Of course, these types of males tend not to do well in academic settings because having to put in lots of hard, slow, and unglorious work runs counterintuitive to their worldview. They turn to these characters because they wish they could take their toddler rage at not being special out on society and have this rage be justified and glamourized. This guy probably felt that way because the porn was teaching him unhealthy messages about sex and women and frying his dopamine receptors.

Incels going troon also allow them to recast their failures and misery as someone else's This transforms his guilt and shame into much more manageable anger, which further fuels a sense of moral grandiosity.

There's a serious streak of glamorizing and celebrating victimhood in society, and it does not lead to anywhere good.

Find a good IRL friend, or relative. That's more productive and can be hard. Paying someone to listen to your problems is insane to me, they do not care. You are no more to them than a client. If you worked in a support job, do you really care that the customer got better off? There are always exceptions, but it's a good idea to just find a friend irl if you can.
