Volunteering is 100000% more useful to anything than charities are. And if you don't have time (or don't want to) but still care there's a billion places you can find out about poor families that want food or whatever. Even just go to a homeless shelter and hand out a gift card (specifically this because, depending on where you live of course, a decent amount of panhandlers you see in big cities aren't actually homeless)

For example, I volunteer at a small military museum in Canada and every penny (when we still had the coin) goes to spare/new parts, fuel, and lubricating oils for the vehicles in the collection.
