I also have to wonder if autism truly does cause this kind of burrowing behavior or if it's just having a repetitive yet fulfilling task. PL and I can only speak as a female autist but as a kid I was compelled to dig massive, complex holes and trenches until someone would come and have to pull me out by the scruff. This behavior was eventually trained out as it not proper lady behavior to dig intricate WW1 trenches but I wonder if it was just a kid thing or if the autism does actually contribute. As I remember it was a good way to work off restless energy and frustration as well as being very peaceful, once you get a good way in to the dirt it's like being under a snow bank. Oh, wow. I watched Colin's bunker video a while back and it was very cool. I didn't know that mad lad went through with the shed-to-house tunnel too. Thanks for the link.
