Team Fortress: Source 2, a fan project seeking to port Valve's classic shooter to the Source 2 engine, is officially dead. The news was announced following a DMCA takedown demand from Valve that blocked the group's GitHub repositories. It joins Portal 64, which was also canceled less than a week after the release of its "First Slice."

The takedown was the "nail in the coffin" for the project, the announcement read, which had already have been on shaky ground before Valve stepped in.

TEAM FORTRESS: SOURCE 2 HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN.
"While we were discussing the project's future internally recently, we already came to the conclusion to stop the development of the project due to the current state of the code being unusable anymore with s&box's recent major engine changes, and that we overall moved on from it," the announcement read.

"Sadly, this means this DMCA takedown is the nail in the coffin. We cannot bring it back and we've hit Valve's attention, it seems like they definitely don't want us to use their IP (which is totally fair and legal from them). From the bottom of our hearts at Amper, it's been an honour to grow this project with all of you and the incredible team behind, we cannot be thankful enough for all your support and enthusiasms over the last 3 years. We're so happy we got this far."

PORTAL 64 REIMAGINED VALVE'S CLASSIC PUZZLE GAME ON NINTENDO 64 HARDWARE.
In development since at least 2021, Team Fortress: Source 2 was envisioned as a new version of the classic game on Garry's Mod spiritual successor s&box. With Team Fortress 2 now 17 years old and largely overrun by bots, Team Fortress: Source 2 was intended to inject fresh life into Valve's beloved shooter. The team at one point had more than 20 volunteers helping to port assets from the base game and rebuild Team Fortress 2 mechanics.

Portal 64, meanwhile is being shuttered due to the project "depending on Nintendo's proprietary libraries," according to an update on the project's Patreon. Like Team Fortress, Portal 64 sought to revive Valve's 2007 classic, but on Nintendo 64 hardware. Its developer celebrated the release of its "First Slice" demonstrating its progress on January 5.

IGN has reached out to Valve for comment.

They announced this change via Twitter/Discord. The DMCA on Github is here. Twitter post, is here. (I used another source for Discord screenshot)

Huh, the Portal 64 thing I get because of Nintendo being Nintendo but the TF2 seems odd to me, Valve always seemed to be pretty lax when it came to fan projects letting them do their thing and even publish them on Steam, like Entropy: Zero and others so I wonder why they decided to do this considering that other TF2 fan projects and mods, such as Open Fortress and TF2 Classic are allowed to operate.

The optimist/conspiracy theorist in me hopes that Valve did this because they are planning on moving TF2 into Source 2 officially so they decided to shut this particular project down for whatever reason.

But most likely this is just Valve acting like cunts.

The Portal 64 project sounds like it would've eventually hit the Nintendo brick wall, if Valve didn't provide a road block. Seeing what they did with The TF2S2 project has me more concern seeing as it makes one wonder if Valve doesn't like this, what's going to happen if you want to do some modifications to future steam deck models. It's more insulting to see this after Portal: Revolution just came out.

I want to hope that is the case as well, but I also think Valve is clamping down on the use of Source 2 outside their own hands for some reason.

I doubt they're going to clamp down on stuff like Steam Deck mods any time soon but their stance on source 2 being effectively a black box only for internal use puzzles me and I don't see a real reason for them to do it other than either middle management faggotry that did not exist before or licensing drama so you could be right.

I'm of the opinion Valve has been slowly going to shit for years now. They've been making increasingly fucked up decisions so much so it's putting them on par with other big name gaming corporation's greed and rampant retardation

Once gabe newell is dead I got a feeling it'll only get worse

Their work on Proton is good, finally shipping a Linux gaming product after the failure of Steam Machines is nice. I guess people are mad about the Windows 7/8 decision. What else have they done that is so terrible?

They probably want to keep Source 2 development in-house either A: forever, B: until they complete all their planned projects so they can fuck off for another decade, or C: until they find a better way to work with third-party developers without risking content leaks.

Portal 64 sounds like a complete tard excursion but bringing TF2 onto a newer engine would be an interesting prospect if that whole community wasn't overrun with troons and people who overpay for cosmetics.

An N64 version of Portal just seems like nintentard autism to me. The game will run on a potato. Anyone can play it and it's cheap. I don't know much about TF2 save for hats and troons and the odd yumejoshi who wants to fuck one of the characters.

Good to see a proper thread has been made for this since I had posted about this in the TF2 Community thread earlier.

Amper Software is the group of trannies responsible for creating and destroying Creators.TF. Let this be a lesson to not support anything they work on because they continually fuck shit up and end up destroying the very thing they worked so hard to build.

I hope they take down the many TF2 mods next. For years, the TF2 mod teams used to package the entirety of TF2's assets into their mod downloads, which is what Amper Software here was doing and what got them shut down. Most mods nowadays don't do this anymore and instead use content mounting similar to what Garry's Mod does. But they still all use leaked code for their mods. Every tf2 mod is built on leaked code. There's nothing stopping Valve from turning around and shutting them all down. And I hope it happens. It's been needing to happen for quite some time now.

There isn't going to be a proper Valve-made TF2 Source 2, that's not why Amper's project was shut down. Their project was shut down because it was doing stuff it shouldn't have been doing with assets they didn't have a license to use. We already have evidence that Valve was working on a Source 2 TF2 a few years ago alongside the canned Left 4 Dead 3. There's a Source 2 project list that was leaked by Valve showing all the S2 stuff they had planned. But they canned Source 2 TF2 on their end years ago. So don't expect a proper S2 TF2 release any time soon, cause it ain't coming.
