Drew Chadwick DeVault / ddevault / SirCmpwn - Opinionated white-male-guilt-ridden software developer. Cancelled Hyprland and slandered it as "toxic" and transphobic. Hates X11 users and Hacker News. Lolicon.

@Null, slight correction to your news update: Drew's not responsible for the Gemini protocol, he's just some fag who published a blog using it. Solderpunk is the person responsible for gemini.
Understandable mistake, because a lot of things I read about Gemini give off a familiar Drew-like feeling.

The "Total Retard War" has apparently reached Drew. The entire infrastructure of his sourcehut code forge is not accessible on the Internet as they've been black holed by Cogent. Since Cogent is their only upstream, nobody can access anything hosted by them (including Drews personal stuff like his blog). (link, archive)

Jersh could've mentioned that he was a vanguard for canceling Stalman et al. in the telegram post because I thought they were just going after some random dude who made a network protocol.
I see now it's warranted.

I've never noticed this thread before until Null sent that update. Just came here to say I worked with Drew for like two years or so at Linode. Yes, he is exactly the nightmare of a co-worker you could imagine for all the obvious reasons from his Internet presence. Also, he really liked Reeeeeeeeeee:Zero, which is objectively a terrible anime. His programming streams were boring too.
So a big fuck you, Drew, for treating me like I'm retarded. I'm patently of slightly above average intelligence I'll have you know.

Can you share any specific examples of what made him unsufferable? Was he a typical cry bully?

Rutkowski is incompetent. Please don't spread this myth around.
I went through his scientific work. First the papers linked on his Invisible Things lab, in most of them he is the second author, first author is mostly Rafal Wojtczuk. This means that Wojtczuk did most of the research. How much Rutkowski did in these works - can't tell. Could be half, could be paper proofreading and coffee chat. I found more papers on Google Scholar that Rutkowski wrote himself. They are not great, but not terrible.

Most of the ones he is the second author or wrote himself could be one or a few separate blog posts. The ones where he is the co-author are mostly dealing with exploiting particular bugs in OS kernel code or virtualization modes of x86 CPUs. I have a feeling that he is the helper programmer who finishes the code of exploits after other authors like Wojtczuk find the exploits or come up with a concept. Qubes OS is a good example of such thing, Rutkowski is listed as "Founder and advisor (formerly architecture, security, and development)", (not sure what "formerly" means in this context). Wojtczuk meanwhile is listed as Architecture and system-level work. I think this gives a reasonable view on Rutkowski competence level.

I would not say he is incompetent. He is average. He gets some extra points for pretending to be a woman so they put him on stage to present the work.
I believe he doesn't warrant a Wikipedia page when I say incompetent, I suppose.
Pretty sure this is either a self-written article or some of his hugbox friends wrote it. Or some retarded wikipedian. Hard to tell. Dumb Shit on Wikipedia is a thread for a reason.

He's now claiming it got blackholed as a DDoS mitigation.
status.sr.ht (archive)
We're gonna get blamed for this, aren't we? (:_(
Cogent solves Denial of Service attacks against their customers by Denying their customers Service. Big brain moves like these are why Cogent has a stock price 30x higher than Lumen! I only wish I could have a brain as big as Dave Schaeffer!

It's very odd. Right now "sourcehut.org 173.195.146.139" is working,
"sr.ht 173.195.146.133" which appears to be the actual code repo is still blocked and traceroutes show it blackholed by Cogent.

Seems very odd they're still blocking some of the IP addresses. I guess unless the DDOS is only targeting that one IP.... or something else is going on.

Hmm, I had a thought. Maybe it was a DDOS, but they weren't the target, they were the source due to a compromise. That would explain the long recovery time.

Grooming tips?

Whatever Drew did, Cogent is very unhappy. Did someone start uploading PDFs of the ongoing Cogent lawsuits to the repository?
They're blocking 128 IP addresses just to make sure he's not on the Internet apparently.

This is a /25, 128 IP addresses and contains the address for sr.ht and others, but possibly also other customers.

This is a /25, 128 IP addresses and contains the address for sr.ht and others, but possibly also other customers.
Out of these 128 addresses only three have a reverse DNS:
173.195.146.137: mail.sr.ht. 173.195.146.151: mail-b.sr.ht. 173.195.146.155: chat.sr.ht.
Not in revdns there is 173.195.146.133 which is sr.ht itself.
The lower half (173.195.146.0/25) is used by other customers. I have a feeling they blacklisted just Drew specifically, hence this netmask.

Well, Drew Default, now you know how it feels to be blackholed, eh?

In "Drew Continues Winning" news... their status page is broken:
2024-01-11_11-14.png
Code:
HTTP/2 302
date: Thu, 11 Jan 2024 19:13:47 GMT
content-length: 0
location: https://status.sr.ht/
https://status.sr.ht/ is redirecting to.... https://status.sr.ht/

Edit: looks like they're moving stuff to Cloudflare.
Here's a hint: don't put the status page on the same service as your main service, that's just dumb.

Edit2: Looks like the status page used to be hosted on "codeberg pages" which appears to be down right now. Maybe it is a DDoS and someone is attacking stuff sourcehut related even though codeberg appears to be unaffiliated. codeberg.org is not quite down but it is very very slow.

CloudFlare smelled a blood in the water and opportunity to make some extra money. (archive)

Kinda surprised, I thought CloudFlare is le bad for not dropping KF sooner. I thought as a real trans ally he would know better. Sad!
I really enjoy how all the DDoS mitigation companies have a link on the very top of their website.. "Need Help Now?" or "Under attack?"
It's basically just a link to enter your credit card information.

Hey, we see you're fucked, give us a ton of money and we'll "protect you"
As Null has said, it's all a giant protection racket.

Nice ClownFlare protection you got there. Would be a shame if you were found to present an "imminent threat to human life" or something.
