The greeks didnt become roman if anything the romans became greeks, The jews didnt become roman, cezar conquered the galls, who did not become roman. Britain? not roman but part of the empire till it wasnt. there wasnt some uniform roman culture then a bunch of barbarian tribes moved in a out did the roman shit.

As someone who's been porting a very large codebase off of some now-dead middleware and messing around with coercing ChatGPT to do some of the gruntwork, it's very good at doing exactly what you want if you can succintly summarize what you need in a single sentence that contains everything you need to know about the problem and gives zero margin for error, eg "Write a regex expression that parses <very long format with variables>" or "Add convenience properties to this class for returning all 2 and 3 element permutations of this 4-element vector". Too bad that 99% of software problems can't be summarized like that.

It's also horrifically bad at code reuse and memory management and does not understand threading, concurrency, hidden dependent state (eg: GPU setup/teardown), conversion truncation or state machines in any sense.

tl;dr : I fully agree with the prediction a page or two back that there's going to be some sort of AI-driven version of the therac-25 incident in the next decade, and I'd go so far as to predict that the code that causes it is going to be something where integral division discards floating point remainders when it shouldn't.

90% of labor and 90% of the workforce are not the same thing. 90% of the old workload may be gone, but the remaining 10% is the most difficult, most time-consuming, most important work there is. The workforce will be free of the overwhelming volume of work and able to focus on fewer, but harder tasks. There will be losses but not 90% of the workforce.
