Important question - what is causing his stress this time? Normally he does this when the pressure is really on or something major is going on but I can't think of anything currently that would warrant this level of scabbery.

He has deplorable hygiene and is a compulsive scratcher. All it would take is for a zit or bug bite to grow on his head and he'll scratch it into a wound. The fact he keeps scratching scabs means they never really get a chance to heal completely.
