Who would have thought bad actors might use a site where you can freely upload homemade pornography without identity or age verification for nefarious intentions.

I remember someone on Reddit basically saying that we all kind of knew this was a possibility when using these services, which is completely correct. People acknowledge that these are problems. But they also acknowledge that there's no adequate way to fix this. For instance, many people complain about children being able to access porn sites freely, but what can actually be done to curtail this? Put up an age verification question? People can just lie. Force websites to collect people's personal information to confirm age? Nobody wants to dox themselves to look at porn, and people definitely don't want to give a porn company their personal details, and the porn companies don't want to be responsible for anybody's personal information (any body remember Ashley Madison?). Have the government collect your information? Yeah, that's right, allow the fucking government to create a database of porn users, no way that could go wrong (this is sarcasm)! Have governments block porn sites? Besides the fact that this will inculcate a first amendment challenge and be a vast government overreach that would turn the government into fucking Australia (and nobody wants the government to be like fucking Australia), any government blocks would be easy to defeat by Tor or VPN. The fact of the matter is, the internet isn't for children. And this isn't just about porn; there's plenty of shit on the internet that needs to be kept away from kids. The only real defense against giving a child unfettered access to the internet is the parent themselves. They are the first and only real line of defense; the responsibility is with them.

When comes to uploading porn, Pornhub did "tighten" their rules; they have an entire paged dedicated to talking about their safety policies, and in order to upload content, you must provide a real photo ID and verify that your a real person with a face scan. But there are still holes in it, such as verification not being required for every model you use in a video. There will probably always be some kind of holes, because they don't do independent verification (like run background checks). On some level, this is desired not just by the website but the userbase itself, and not just the bad actors, because they desire their privacy. Despite this, however, I've never seen a single video on the site that I thought crossed that line, and I'm sure most people will say the same. These issues are not unique to Pornhub; Tumblr was infamously built on porn, including child porn apparently, to the point that when they banned porn entirely, the site went to shit and dropped off the face of the Earth. Twitter has had a long history of problems with child porn being uploaded to the site with impunity, despite attempts by the site to police it constantly, and just like Pornhub, its had its share of exposes written on the subject. This is a general issue that comes with maintaining anonymity on the internet and these large monolithic platforms, making it nearly impossible to police all content.
