IIRC he was asked about at one or two State Dept press conferences and the most they would say was they were aware of him and were monitoring the situation. I just did a search of the thread for 'Kirby' (State Dept spokesman who gives the briefings) but it didn't return any hits. I'm pretty sure those instances were mentioned here with clips when they happened since this is the only place I would've been made aware of them.

The US has let their own citizens serve their sentences in ally nations before like Jack Edema or US soldiers held in Afghan prisons for war crimes.

The tyrant Zelensky showed no mercy because he had been criticized by Lira. The left claims Zelensky is a modern-day Churchill. Nope. He’s a two-bit Stalin.
Adding to the disgrace, the corporate propaganda media all but ignored Lira’s predicament. To be sure, the media was all in a tither when Saudi Arabia executed a Saudi citizen and dissident journalist named Jamal Khashoggi, who had written a few articles for The Washington Post. The media had their dander up about that because it enabled them to blame President Trump. Will Biden receive any blame for failing to aid Lira, who was tortured and left to die? Of course not.

I dunno, man. The way I see it, it's more like was strolling casually across a busy highway. Yeah, it takes balls to do that, but it's also so fucking retarded that you can't feel bad for the guy when what happens happens. I follow a fair share of pro-Russian commentators, and do you know the single attribute that they all share that CRP didn't have? The basic common sense not to do what they do in Ukraine. It's not like he was stuck there; he could have driven over the border with Poland or gone to the US embassy and been evacuated.

I will give him this: he made a much bigger impact on the world than Kraut or Sargon, or anyone else you might care to name ever will, but was it really worth trading his life to do, when dying in prison was the most likely outcome? And if he thought the US government would bail him out if he got locked up, well, that's false bravery. I am not trying to justify what the Ukrainians did; I think it's horrible and hypocritical of them. However, he knew the risks, and they were far more than I think any reasonable person in his shoes would be willing to face. For that, I really don't think he deserves the accolades.
