because it's too late for that now. even if you get all women to pump out babies by the end of the year, those babies will only be able to contribute in roughly two decades - long after the political fossils are dead, and anyone else doesn't want to wait that long. imported cheap labor can basically start immediately (in theory at least) keeping the social security pyramid scheme going a while longer.

It was an idea born from compromise by the Founding Fathers who couldn't decide if Congress should choose the President or they should be directly elected. One camp thought the Congress picking the President wold result in too much corruption between the executive and legislative branches and the other thought a headstrong "democratic mob" could lead things astray. Remember this was a time when state legislatures still did things like appoint senators on a federal level.

It's a mechanism that makes sense for the circumstances it was made from but it is easy to see why people dislike it considering American history in the last 150 years.

it makes perfect sense for the reason it was designed: to give small, less populous states more power against the big states. The US is not a democracy, it was never meant to be and the closer we get to democracy the worse it has become.

At the time the electoral college was enacted, they were worried about one or 2 cities ruling the entire country.
At that time, the ENTIRE COUNTRY had the population of just one middling US city today.
We not only need the electoral college to preserve liberty, we need the concept expanded to the state and even county levels today.

You'd be surprised how much the political analyst profession agrees with this. Nothing will convince you more of the need for it than personally handling the raw numbers. Hell, some of my fellows go further and say you should have it even break up individual major cities by groups of suburbs/boroughs.
