The Puritans (aka Pilgrims) were part of a protestant movement seeking freedom from persecution, yes, but most people who came here came here to make money and live a bit more freely from the monarchy more than they came for faith because a lot of them came from places where their faith was already the majority doctrine.

I wouldn't expect a heretic to understand this but at the time the big "persecution" was from the Catholic Church toward Protestants. The majority belief was still Christianity though, it's not like there were a lot of Muslim founders.

The importance of freedom of religion to them was secondary to the freedom of expression. To their minds if you cannot worship freely you cannot speak freely and if you cannot speak freely you are not free. Boiling down the entire founding of our country to "well the Christians wanted freedom from those, er, Christian fascists!" is as dumb as boiling down the civil war to fighting for farm equipment to be free.
