He’s a lot like Lorne, for those in here who know who the real Lorne Armstrong is.

Gunt, like Lorne, believes because he WANTS to believe, NEEDS to believe, in order to keep the reality of his situation out of his own mind. He’s told Harry in the past that he suffers from “intrusive thoughts” and attempts to self-medicate, same as Lorne has told his catfish that he “drinks to forget”.

A person in this state is easy pickings for catfish/scammers/etc. it’s why you see crazy cat ladies on Dr Phil who have blown their dead husband’s entire retirement savings/pension on some Nigerian scammer. Deep down, they KNOW it’s bullshit but they WANT so desperately for it to be true that they MAKE it true in their own minds, try to convince themselves daily that it’s true, and then drink themselves stupid every night when they’re alone with their thoughts and no longer able to distract themselves.

What makes it even worse for Gunt is that, like Lorne, he convinces himself that he’s the one running the scam. In his mind, he tells himself that HE’S the smart one, spitting game at this little flaquita and talking her into his bed. The whole fantasy is a HUGE ego boost for him and that’s why he’ll do crazy things to keep it going like leaving his safe space in Merida for Guerrero which is right smack dab in the middle of Cartel bullshit, because if he lets it go then it’s back to chugging booze/pills to keep the intrusive thoughts away that remind him constantly of what a loser he really is.

Coach and Gunt both claimed to be “journalists” and 3 real journalists were abducted in Guerrero last summer, one from Taxco. 4 reporters were shot in Guerrero just a couple months back. Would we get news articles about Gunt if the sicarios snatched him? Missing persons flyers? Or would they just not care at the Consulate?
