As Black Americans continue to grow weary of life in the United States, many are seeking out new homes abroad as expats. There is always discussion amongst the community about which locales around the world Black expats can feel comfortable and thrive in. One increasingly popular destination that continually comes up in the conversation is Nairobi, Kenya. Here are four reasons Black Americans should move to the East African metropolis of Nairobi.

Being Surrounded by Other Black People​

One of the biggest draws of relocating to an African city is the ability to leave behind the systemic racism so heavily ingrained in U.S. society. In Nairobi, the majority of the people you encounter will look like you, and people are generally quite friendly there. From the Kenyan natives to other Black expats from around the world, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful brown skin. Nairobi already has an established African American expat community. This means that Black Americans can find a supportive community that shares their values and experiences.

Having a Lower Cost of Living​

Another thing Black expats in Nairobi have enjoyed is the affordability of the city. With a lower cost of living than in the U.S., residents can find everything from housing to groceries available at better prices. Your money can stretch further, allowing you to live a comfortable lifestyle on a modest budget.

Access to Economic Opportunities​

Despite slowing down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenya’s economy is continuously growing. As the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi is at the center of the action. Black expats will find a wide range of job opportunities in fields like technology, finance and healthcare. Those who would like to start their own business will also find Nairobi to be a welcoming environment for entrepreneurs.

Enjoying Nice Weather​

Nairobi’s sub-tropical highland climate is another huge draw. Though situated near the equator, the city sits at an elevation of over 5,000 feet. Thus, it experiences mild, comfortable temperatures throughout the year. In addition, Nairobi is also known for its beautiful scenery and wildlife, which further add to its appeal for expats.

People tend to ignore all the progress many parts of Africa have made. Nairobi is certainly good for digital nomads, but I wouldn't want to earn a local wage.

This article assumes that the reader is making at least $75k a year and is working for a company that isn't trying to strong-arm its workers into coming back to the office. If that's the case then relocating should be a no-brainer; not only do you get the dramatically lower cost of living, but you can put your kids in a nice walled international school where Tyrone from the ghetto and Fritz the Haitian refugee won't be able to drag them into the muck which you yourself escaped from.

I live in Kenya (As a white Britbong). Nairobi has some nice places but it's largely a dump. As someone who grew up in the west it's pretty shocking and sad to come here and see genuine poverty all around, and there are some terrible slums even in Nairobi.

I find Kenyan people are generally pretty nice, but then I'm a white guy so I definitely get treated differently purely because they know I have money. I talk to and work with a lot of (black) Kenyans who complain about the culture of treating white people differently not from the perspective of 'fuck white people', but lamenting the inferiority complex within Kenyan society and their own problems with tribalism and mysogyny (Women get treated like shit here and have to put up with a lot of insults and creepy sexual behaviour, and as someone who works here I have to deal with tribal issues all the time where, for example, your workforce is going to develop rival factions down tribal lines).

Because of this tribal culture I think Black Americans would have to put up with more shit than I do. As a white guy I'm naturally considered a total outsider to all of it, but black people can be very openly and casually hostile and insulting to other black people that aren't a part of their group.

Also the quality of life here can be pretty bad even if you have money. There are constant power grid problems and blackouts, and sometimes you literally have to bribe people to get it fixed quickly. It can be tough to find good quality electronics and retail goods (I often pay out the ass to have goods shipped into the country because I can't get them here). Going out for food is extremely hit and miss as the quality is inconsistent even in the more reliable of restaurants. It can be tough to find good quality meat and ingredients for your own cooking, and often there are shortages of certain things like milk in supermarkets (tbf this is probably less of an issue in Nairobi). Worksmanship in general is shocking, you can't find good skilled contractors and their professionalism and standard of work is often terrible, and 100% they'll try grifting you and will always be looking to steal if they're around your shit. If they know you have money, the people here will do everything they can to try and get it out of you. They'll charge you more for services, they'll invent bullshit stories and grievances asking for compensation, they'll guilt trip you constantly ...

I attended an American community college, and a guy in my program was a black guy who had immigrated from Nairobi. He was a pretty-intelligent black guy, and he had a good work ethic, and good hustle, and therefore he despised the local African Americans who he considered lazyasses who would rather whine and complain rather than take advantage of the amazing opportunities that America offered them.

The Nairobi guy had no problem handling the college classes, but, what he couldn't do was behave himself around women. He just could not stop being a lecherous creepo, and they gave him at least half a dozen more chances than a person of my skin tone would ever have been granted, but the admin of the college was eventually forced to expel him for inappropriate behavior.

He basically came right out and admitted that perving on the ladies was a cornerstone of his culture, and he couldn't control himself.

Yes, it is racist as fuck. Let me count the ways:

"Being around other Black people":
1. It is saying that Kenyans and African Americans are similar because they share a skin colour, completely disregarding actual values, culture, language, background, etc.
2. It is grossly of the "all Black people are one group" mindset. Africa is fucking huge and has many different racial groups in it. The largest majority of African American's ancestry came from West Africa. Kenyans are not West African. I can't be bothered to work it out precisely but the distance between say Nigeria and Kenya is probably as great as between UK and Moscow.
3. It's not necessarily a negative statement about non-Black people but it gets darn close.
4. Following on from 3. the reason it's probably a negative is because there are LOTS of Black people in the USA. It's not like any given Black person wont know or can't know whole communities of other Black people. So the way one reasonably interprets the statement is actually to say "be the majority". I.e. you want to have racial dominance.

And I could go on with more...

Frankly, an American born writer shouldn't really be making arguments like this. The only legitimate people could would be Kenyans - i.e. the argument would be invitational rather than impositional. But I highly doubt Kenyans as a whole would be making such arguments. I don't know that Kenya would welcome a sudden influx of US-raised African Americans.
