The other thing that's worth pointing out is how many of those routes were to small towns. Sure, it would probably be a cheaper route to go from Podunkville, IL to Chicago, but still a major expense...and given the scorn for small towns, why should every single dinky town get a rail station?Now, let me concede that most of the stuff City Nerd says in his video is correct. Rail routes have greatly diminished since the 1950's. But let's take a look at why they diminished. First, lets take a look at a popular journey of Chicago to Los Angeles. Per Amtrak the current travel time is 40+ hours.
It's not like anyone wants a train ride to Wheatfield, Indiana.
