Oldies - Playing the Greatest Hits of the 50's, 60's, and 70's

Steely Dan's Gaucho in 1980 is a masterpiece album and infamously 3 tracks were cut out of the album due to the duo's perfectionist mindset. The most famous one being The Second Arrangement, the track was accidentally deleted while being completed. In the last couple years a movement started to remaster these tracks by fans. Last month the daughter of Roger Nichols uploaded a high quality working tape of TSM. Now three tracks sound gorgeous, worthy of studio release which is just amazing.

Why am I quoting a months old post? Well because I just want to state again how much I love these damn tracks. Kulee Baba is now my new alias because I no longer wanted to associated with an utterly odious person & alleged rapist. But I digress Kulee Baba is one of the coolest songs I've ever heard and the lyrics are just brillian:

My interpretation of the song is that this is about a morally shady Mondo filmmaker. This interpretation must be taken with a grain of salt since it comes from a Newsgroup but allegedly the actual "Kulee Baba" is a Swahili ritual dance to honor the dead. If that's true the exploitative nature of our narrator is so hilariously evil. I just love the line "Don't chew on that power cable son, I guess I owe ya one." Like he's dealing primitive Africans who have no idea that their spiritual ceremony is being used as entertainment for the 1st World masses. And interesting that Fagen/Becker touch on Christian spirituality with our narrator having an apparent freakish night like there's some divine intervention attempting him to halt in his wicked ways, but he's not going to stop he's going to head off to Cameroon likely to film more Africa wildness.

But I digress, in the attached zip files are 3 mp3s which make up my current "Lost Gaucho." There is NO file of "The 2nd Arrangement" in this zip because the fine folks at Universal Music Group have copyright struck all fan edits of the 2nd Arrangement using the superior recovered Roger Nichols tape. Which is a real damn shame because the fanmix done by Michael Caplin (who did all these remixes) is utterly fantastic I really wish I could share it with everyone but I just cannot. But anyway when you combine Gaucho with "The Lost Gaucho" it in my eyes becomes one of the greatest albums of all time. TEN BRILLIANT TRACKS of brilliant Jazz Rock. I don't even know if @AnOminous or @Dan of Steel or anyone else will want to even download my little .zip file I just want to share these 3 songs with as many people as I can. Who knows how much worse music sharing will be in the future I just want this to serve as a little time capsule. I have more faith that Kiwifarms will miraculously stay alive over record corporations not being complete utter twats.

I've been on a Roxy Music kick lately. To me their earlier 70s stuff was really cool while they ended up getting more worn out and insipid as things got closer to the 80s.

Cool stuff all around, but honestly after listening to these remasters I can see why they didn't make the cut. They're fine Steely Dan songs on their own, though they don't quite manifest the same overall mood of creeping over the hill desperation spilling over into full blown insanity Fagen and Becker were going with on Gaucho as well as Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen, Glamour Profession, and Third World Man (one of my favorites if only because of how jarring it is as a closer after the more up-tempo parts of the album, it just oozes despair in a perfect way).

I was on a David Lynch kick some time ago and that scene with Roy Orbison's In Dreams was probably the most memorable part of Blue Velvet. I can see why this type of music went out of style, but it's really nice on occasion.

I wondered if this would be a fun thought experiment or not but figured it would be fun to ask a form about this. I work at an antique shop and I've ran the store a few times by myself. We had a record player in and I brought some of my records in, At the time I got really into the Velvets so I played the last two albums they had (grey album/loaded). I figured people would enjoy something new they haven't heard but they all seemed really annoyed and upset with the music. We're usually praised for good music we mostly play like Motown, radio hits and hippie music. Although its funny because most people usually complain about how music isn't the same and how they wished new stuff that sounded like the stuff from their childhood would release Ect. figured I'd ask just as a more thought question instead of something serious am. I reading too much into this? Are old people just mad because they aren't kids anymore?
Ill leave a few examples of songs from the album if you havent heard anything from it before
