Business Big Tech Layoffs Megathread - Techbros... we got too cocky...

Since my previous thread kinda-sorta turned into a soft megathread, and the tech layoffs will continue until morale improves, I think it's better to group them all together.

For those who want a QRD:

Just this week we've had these going on:

But it's not just Big Tech, the vidya industry is also cleaning house bigly:

All in all, rough seas ahead for the techbros.

As spotted by a ResetEra user, the layoffs were listed on What Layoff, an automated X account which lists verified layoffs as they’re announced.

The account noted that, according to a California WARN notice, Sega of America “will lay off 61 employees on March 8, 2024”.

California’s WARN Act (which stands for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) legally requires companies to give 60 days notice before a mass layoff.

VGC has confirmed via the State of California’s Employment Development Department that Sega of America has given notice of plans for two separate layoffs of 49 staff and 12 staff, both of which will be made effective on March 8.

According to numerous employer information resources, Sega of America has roughly 440 staff, meaning a layoff of this nature would theoretically affect around 13% of its workforce.

Sega has yet to officially announce the layoffs – VGC has contacted the company for a statement.

Not sure what he expected - Were they supposed to fire them before the game was done and jeopardize everyone else's jobs in the process by threatening the project? Were they supposed to know years in advance they'd need todays cut and to never hire them in the first place?

Layoffs suck, but there's no "good" time for anyone involved, and the least bad time is when you're no longer in need of their work. You're paid to make games, not paid to have made games before. They're cutting back and don't need you to make the next game, such is life.

Most people don't understand why scrum/agile is important and just go through the motions.
Waterfall sucks, but badly managed waterfall sucks less than badly managed agile/scrum, I feel. At least for waterfall, there's a pretense of trying to understand the customer big picture before trying to build the thing. Whereas if you're in a shitty agile project, you'll be forever stuck trying to chase moving goals with no clear end on how the product even would look like at the end of the day.

I like agile/scrum. I fucking hate how most middle management do not understand what it's supposed to be.
Middle management sucks at managing agile because they feel they can always inject whatever into any sprint because its agile. The only way to mitigate this is to have a director or manager who spent a lot of time as a developer and knows exactly how to tell paper pusher managers to shut the fuck up.

This is how agile works:
  • Over a specified time period you get features X,Y,Z through mutual agreement.
  • After they are developed feedback is provided to further refine features X,Y,Z.
  • The next sprint is for features Xa, Ya, Za over a specified time period.
  • Rinse and repeat until desired result is achieved.
How agile doesn't work is having middle managers change the sprint tasks on Friday in a two week sprint into something completely different. Then immediately throw you under the bus for not completing it on the next Friday when the sprint concludes. Then, when pressed on their faggotry they just claim that sprints work how they're doing them and its your fault for not being competent and that nothing they learned in school says they can't completely change a sprint at the last second. Because that's agile!
From my experience, Agile is a buzzword that's used by dysfunctional management.

Corponiggers refuse to accept that Pandora's Box doesn't close after it's opened and office culture is the only thing that'll get people to voluntarily return. Unfortunately, you generally need management with an engineering and/or operations background to do that well instead of business corponiggers.

Most people in any industry aren't the people leading it or making the big choices. Most of those being fired had no meaningful say in anything.
A&N is basically /pol/-lite now. Many of these people aren't here for nuanced discussion and just want their biases confirmed while doom scrolling.
Actually, I don't remember that happening, I remember employees in service industry getting fired and normies bitching and moaning about how hard it is for them to stay at home for a week without seeing their friends or some shit.
People who live on Twitter or get Twitter screenshots/articles think that was the case.

A family friend has a small company that has a job opening for a jack-of-all-trades IT guy. He's seeing a lot of resumes from people who worked at FAANG companies previously, for a job that clearly states the starting salary is 60k.
You also need to see what type of employment. There are tech bros and pajeets who put Google internships on their resumes as full time jobs.

I've seen it work as advertised at two of my previous employers. It was glorious. Every other place i have worked, it has been complete corporate buzzwords and blame shifting.

also you're acting like most tax dollars don't go to welfare bullshit at this point, most people rarely benefit from federal or state spending. i'd rather have one less car on the road or person waiting in line.
Even if most tax dollars go to gibs, the gibs go to Cletus and Shaniqua who spend it in the US at Walmart or wherever. Walmart hires locals to man those stores, the money goes back into the local economy. Both walmart and Cletus/Shaniqua pay sales or corporate taxes on the stuff they buy/sell, which is more money for the city and state to spend on police and roads and so on.

A lot of them are doing this to avoid having to explain why the company is overpaying on commercial real estate they don't need. Because values are tanking, the property owners are not letting companies out of their leases for anything. It all starts to look like the executives made bad and unnecessary expenditures when they bought/leased all that space in really expensive cities. And overpaid for talent because of the artificial concentration of people in large cities. Better to force all the peasants to return to office and justify that square footage.

The other reason they do it is to encourage unhappy employees to lay themselves off before the company has to. They never enforce those rules on people they want to keep around.

Same. The one company turned a lot around with it but the other large corporation created more problems with it. The indians were the worst about it and couldn't understand a lot of it is "build your own" based on your company culture, structure, and team dynamics. The indian teams had 45min standups at 9am daily. They didn't get much done throughout the day.

Journoscum telling hardworking people fucked over by government intervention Learn 2 Code 10 years ago removed any chance for nuance when the coders' turn came. Learn 2 Plumb.

Crazy idea but how about the state just pay Cletus and Shaniqua to work on the roads and shit directly instead? And just avoid this weird indirect gibs system that conveniently makes sure giant mega corps get a cut.

But it does. People who live on twitter, telegram, and A&N have a warped view of reality. Most people who work with computer technology aren't "soys" and "journoscum" don't represent an industry they don't work in. If you let a small group of people, many of whom are trust fund kids, dictate your beliefs, despite hating and distrusting them, then you've given them control over your views and get what you deserve.
I can do yet another write-up about how the meme retorts about trades aren't accurate and the trades aren't as rosy as they claim but those people just want their sour grapes validated.

Some of the reasons are:
They won't work.
They won't do a good job.
The government programs set up to place them in jobs end up costing more than just giving them cash.

Because outside of it not being in the mega corps interests, people get really squeamish at the thought of State Workhouses for menial labor of the undesirables. As far as I'm concerned, if you got the ability to move around a room and lift an envelop, you can deliver office mail or some shit I don't care. Only freebees should be for the genuinely retarded, incompetent, and incapacitated, and all three should be dispersed as caring assistance to the adult responsible for them. Doesn't even have to be full time, I don't really care if Cletus gets the money for doing fuck and all most of the year as long as he's on the snow shoveling crew when the winter storm hits. Its the moral of the action, not the quantity.

That squeamishness isn't undeserved of course, its super easy for it to be abused to hell and back. But a man can dream....

>two amazing games
>they butchered the localization and antagonized the audience
>they did this to the point Sega had to retract endorsing a Japan Times article about how they bragged about inserting their politics into the core work and not just the localized works

God, this insufferable faggot. This just leads me to believe someone on that team is the reason he got the role because he apparently missed the deadline for auditions.

If it was a smaller game/studio, I'd be inclined to think it was a marketing move to take someone with an existing audience. But Yakuza is irrefutably bigger than Yong, so yea doesn't make much sense unless their marketing team is just retarded. Which is certainly a possibility, I guess.

Time for him to make a 20 minute video that would be 2 minutes if he didn't repeat his one point 50 times.
