Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

The script was written by Ichirou Okouchi of the Code Geass fame. That's why the autists here get triggered by it.
Always remember The United States of Japan.
It's not just Crybaby though, it's normal for Devilman fans to come out of nowhere and say "this is the worst thing ever made"when you mention any version of it besides the original manga. Happened to me when I asked if Devilman G was any good on an anime forum some years back.

Checking the wiki for devilman mentions how it was praised for "openly lgbt characters" which is massive red flag for me.

Dunno who the fuck okouchi is.

Because it literally is. I've read things that even english language only people dont get access that is Devilman related and I can affirm that is that bad. There is not a single good thing in it. You know the idea of making Miki family christian? It was done first in the film and it was better there. Even the Magazine TV manga by being simple action manga does things better and respect it more than the travesty that is crybaby.

It is incredible how having a foundation right there and the author managed to make mistakes in all moves, it is astonishing.

And I will read Devilman G since recently it was scanned fully. And I doubt it will be as bad as crybaby.

Even more when you already had Gekiman talking abou nagai intentions in Devilman and they managed to fuck it up. Jesus fucking christ I hate crybaby so fucking much

Any anime or manga recs that are slice of life character driven comedies disguised as anything else? I can’t handle any more high school girls. I’m a grown ass man.
I don't know if these can be classified as "character-driven", but watch Tenchi Muyo and Oh My Goddess if you haven't already, as they have slice-of-life and ecchi comedy elements layered under either sci-fi or magical settings.

I hate slice-of-life moe shit and high school girl pandering (likely) more than anyone on this thread, and I found both of these immensely enjoyable.

Valvrape the Penetrator. Code Geass was fun in the insanity, but I don't think Netflix Devilman even had that crazy ass energy old sunrise anime had.

Does Sunrise still exist?
According to Wikipedia Sunrise still exists though they are probably just supplying Bandai with ideas and material for Bandai to finish

A shame, but western media shows how bad things get when you don't let the old studios die and get replaced by new ones.

Alright, now that we're about four episodes in I might as well post a summary of the shows I'm watching

Shangri-La Frontier: Excellent, with good pacing and a compelling story and action scenes

Fluffy Paradise: Good, so far is cute but is probably going to turn a shade or two darker

Banished from the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside: Okay, looks like it might be building up to something but the current theme is unclear

7th Time Loop: Good, I liked the manga and the anime is well written but it has the OP character trope

Tsukimichi - Moonlight Fantasy Season 2: Okay, not as interesting as the first season though

Hokkaido Gals are Super Cute: Okay, is cute and sweet but not super compelling

The Foolish Angel Dances with the devil: Meh, not quite sure what is going on here

Villainess Level 99: Good: Main character is hilarious

Doctor Elise: Excellent: The manga was excellent and looks like the anime is faithful to it

Gushing Over Magical Girls: Meh, I'm not sure why I'm watching this now that the novelty has worn off

Metallic Rouge: Meh, not really that interesting

Delicious in Dungeon: Great, follows the manga closely with lots of engaging interactions between the characters

My Instant Death Ability is overpowered: Meh, mildly interesting but it goes through characters like toilet paper

Frieren: Great: a relaxed but interesting story with characters you find yourself rooting for.

The Weakest Tamer: Great: it follows the manga closely aside from the girl talking to herself as a way of verbalizing the internal dialogue between her and her past life

The Wrong Way to use Healing Magic: Good: Concept and main characters (ignoring the other two heros) are interesting

Undead Unluck: Meh, was great at first but has an escalation problem that's getting annoying. Also how do you kill a season?

The Unwanted Undead Adventurer: Good, aside from the undead-becoming-human concept there isn't a lot unique to it

Mashle: Magic and Muscles Season 2: Meh, relies on dumb humor that gets tired by the second season

Solo Levelling: Good, seems to follow the manga well and the concept is interesting

Blue Exorcist Season 3: Meh, the first two seasons were excellent but the third one seems aimless

The Apothecary Diaries: Excellent: Maomao is an interesting character that finds herself in all sorts of engaging mysteries

The Daily Life of the Immortal King Season 4: Meh, is funny but earlier series at least tried to not make everything effortless or meaningless for the main character.

It's a lot funnier panel-to-panel, whoever is directing this anime is doing a fucking terrible job at bringing out any of its charm. Mashle has some amazing battle scenes in the manga and they'd definitely make it onto people's radar with better animation and directing. I'm really getting tired of seeing good source material getting extremely low effort adaptations that make it look like shit.

I noticed this S1E1 during the scene where he initially slaps away the magic like it's nothing. They cut out the reaction face the magic police chief, initially of abject shock, then the subsequent time of plaintive resignation. In the source material this made the scene 10 times funnier.

Quite a bit of the humor in this series is tailor made for still-frames, and it baffles me that they wouldn't take advantage of the "less is more" principle here, especially if they're on a limited budget. They faithfully adapted the "OK" panel from One punch man and it became one of the most iconic scenes of the adaptation. Why not aim for the same thing?

Ashihara Hinako, a 50-year-old Japanese manga artist, has been found dead near Tokyo. Japanese media report that the police are treating the matter as a possible suicide after finding a note at her home on Monday.

Ashihara was the author of the "Sexy Tanaka-san" manga, which was initially published by Shogakukan. Nippon Television began airing a 10-part live-action adaptation in October of last year, starring Kinami Haruka in the lead role.

The story depicts a 40-year-old woman accountant who has a secret life as a belly dancer. When her secret is discovered by a co-worker, the two polar opposites manage to bring the best out in each other.

"Don't miss this rom-com that is guaranteed to leave you in stitches constantly, with an occasion[al] dash of tears," says the blurb for the show on NTV's content catalog.

Ashihara, however, was not amused and earlier in January used X (formerly Twitter) and her own blog to criticize the NTV adaptation. She said that the live-action show had not stuck faithfully to her manga, which had been a condition of its production.

Ashihara, who has other credits including "Forbidden Dance" (available in English), "Bitter – Nakechau Koi Monogatari," "Yubikiri" and "Girls Lesson," subsequently deleted the postings.

She posted an apology– "I didn't mean to attack. I'm sorry" – in the early afternoon on Sunday but was reported missing the same day. She was found dead at home on Monday.

As foreign media and without membership of a Japanese press club, Variety does not have access to Tokyo police reports. However, details of the case have been reported by mainstream Japanese media including the Japan Times and Nippon Television's own NTV News service.

The Japan Times has likened the social media outcry to the furore that followed the death in May 2020 of "Terrace House" participant Kimura Hana.

The publication explained that Ashihara had complained that the Aizawa Tomoko-drafted screenplay of the adaptation had deviated too far from her original work. Ashihara stepped in to take over the scripts for the last two episodes. All 10 parts received strong ratings, with over 5% audience share.

After the full show had finished airing in December, Aizawa used Instagram to explain the strange plot deviations of the final two, albeit without directly naming Ashihara.

Social media apparently erupted. Some fans sided with the screenwriter and called Ashihara too precious. Others labeled Aizawa a "crusher of original works."

Since the announcement of Ashihara's death, one X post calling Aizawa a murderer has over 8,000 likes. Another with over 13,000 likes blames Nippon Television for not supporting Ashihara and says that the company's statement on her death is inadequate.

Nippon Television, which is the owner of Hulu Japan and is also in the process of buying a controlling stake in Studio Ghibli, has not replied to Variety's enquiries.

On Wednesday, Ashihara's family issued a brief statement through Shogakukan. "We have lost our beloved family member and are in a state of bewilderments," it said before explaining that they would not be accepting media requests for comment.
