First time listener, long time Fishtank watcher. I checked out this episode because I didn't want to hear Jon in the most recent ep... what even is this? What's the point? It's literally guy friends who want to turn their hangout session into a "podcast." Literally a fucking meme.

I'm not able to watch more, can't say I hate Ben proper from this but he is obnoxious as far as I've listened. Can't take any more...

Whats with those forced attempts to make Chris Lynch some sort of eceleb? I'm genuinely convinced Jet & friends have some sort of blackmail on Sam.

I don't think you can really fault the fish for bringing up "making content" and focusing on it so much. I remember Jet telling Trish when she was in the dog house to not worry about being entertaining and making content, he wanted the fish to just be themselves because "that's real" and that Fish Tank is about 'real' people etc. Jet told her that it was the producers job to worry about entertainment. He seemed to genuinely mean that.

The problem is that what Jet said to Trish goes against everything else he and Sam and Ben had been berating the fish about for weeks. Almost every day Jet, Sam, and/or Ben would tell the fish how boring they are, how the audience wants entertainment, how being entertaining and gaining fans is important, etc. At first you could maybe excuse it as a bit, but then it became obvious that the crew meant it. The crew wanted the fish to be non-stop content generating machines and were genuinely getting pissed when yelling and insulting the fish didn't make them anymore entertaining.

Outside of someone like Jimmy who is a special kind of non-stop sperg, you can't expect most people to be dynamic and engaging 24/7, especially when the main reason things are so boring and tense is due to the crew's lack of planning and ever changing rules.

Also someone else was saying they had four contestants for too long this season - they had Jimmy until the 22nd day, and last season they lost Damiel on the 20th. Given they ended this season a day early they had four contestants for three fewer days and seemed to literally end because they couldn't take the drag any longer.

I agree that the time period is about the same as S1 but remember that S2 moved at a far more accelerated pace and had far more hostility built into it than S1. Of the remaining fish only Tay and Shinji were genuinely interesting people, capable of having good conversations and antics entertaining enough to fill the time, the production staff had made a choice to separate them from each other which actively killed any sort of content towards the end. The vibe in S1 was that they're all friends going through a really strange set of circumstances, the vibe in S2 was just trying to get the fish to tear eachother apart and it kinda killed any attempts at the fish just socializing for its own sake. Shinji and Tay just merely worked together for revenge on Fatty, not out of genuine joy in working with each other any longer. The vibes were totally different in the back half of both seasons.

Chris Lynch being just a decent guy who hanged out with the fish had more of an impact on TJ than all of Sam's and Jet's forced growth arc attempts. His drunken statement of "Whoever fucks with Greg is fucking with me" stopped TJ cold and made him reassess how the tank had been affecting his morals, he followed Chris to the basement like a puppy when he was leaving for the night, then went to confessional and talked about how he had just realized that he was screwing with a mentally retarded guy for entertainment, and he didn't want to be a part of that any longer. Then he got a bit more depressed as he was sobering up and did his art critique in B1. Just a small bit of positivity there had a dramatic effect on TJ as a person far more than all of the Lubecooch dog piles and negativity from Ben and Jet.

You could contrast this with how Tay was just fed negativity the whole time only for Sam to come in at the last hour and try forcing some sort of leadership arc ending for her. The problem is, Tay was already a leader in the early season. She tried helping Summer during her mental break, she tard wrangled Jimmy away from stuff that would cause him to rage, when she saw Britney was being really inconsistent in her mannerism she went to warn TJ him that she may be sent there as a succubus to see if he had learned from the Taylor experience, she tried bringing TJ into the boxing training without prompting, she was consistently the team leader for events and made sure to pick people she was actively irritated with just to bury the beef and keep them included. By the time Sam tried giving her that growth arc stuff she had been ostracized from the other fish and it was just impossible to reconcile the whole thing.

The problem is that Fatty was somewhat forced into this position when Chris points became real. He was a background character before and after the Chris points, Shinji, Tay, and Trish were ready and willing to assert dominance any time Chris overstepped his bounds. The first time was Tay's Tuesday dogpile day. Shinji rang the bell and put him in the doghouse only for Shinji, Tay, and Trish to hurl mustard, grits and spoiled milk on him in the doghouse which caused him to declare he was leaving, which immediately got derailed by Tay getting accused of smoking weed when she went into the gooncave to get eggs to smash on Frank's head since he had just arrived. You can't forget Tay nailing him into the Goon Cave or Shinji and Tay hurling slop on him multiple times in a single day.

Fatty can get annoying really quick but Trish, Tay, and Shinji continously slapped him back into a background state which was quite refreshing and where he operates best.
