I have no idea what either of those things are.
People have suggested Sol Bianca, Banner of the Stars, and Captain Harlock, and I absolutely agree with those choices. Captain Harlock is one of my favourite anime. There's also Queen Emeraldas (the manga, not the anime), Starzinger, Crusher Joe, Starship Operators, Dirty Pair, Tytania, AWOL, and Terra E. I'm rereading the Terra E manga right now, and it's dystopian fiction like Brave New World, but in space. The space stuff, while well-done, is ultimately incidental to the development of the main characters as they lead their respective causes. The art gets very shoujo-ish because there are lots of pages with just the characters' heads surrounded by splotches of light and dialogue. It contains a foundational element of UC Gundam -- a new telepathic race born from measures taken to protect the Earth's environment.

That reminds me, the TP manga concluded a year or two ago but an updated translation can't be found anywhere on these sites. They all stop around 20+ chapters in. They've got the updated volume covers which spoil Midna's sweet ass, but there's been no new content added in over a half decade...

Rocket Girls leans a bit too hard into the humor and leering at teenaged girls but it also scratches that "near future plausible SF" itch.
If only they finished the story, still we got a good overdubbed spoof of it...

Seconding this. I recently rewatched it, and it's an excellent representation of physics in space. It's one of my favourite OVAs, in fact.
