He's done stuff like this in the past with books as well where he read a different book each month (i think he ended up doing a few different books if he was able) and it's not like he just read comic books or whatever. He had a variety of stuff that ranged from nonfiction, to philosophical, to fiction.

Mostly, because Europeans have a more refined culture with thousands of years of history behind them. Anime in general usually leads to some pretty degenerate stuff, but then you have people like Hayao Miyazaki, "Hajime Yatate", or Katsuhiro Otomo who use the form as a basis to make some pretty good work, without trooning out into random nonsense.

Did the guy say he drew himself as an anime girl or just used his expression for reference for the character? Plenty of artists will use their own expressions for reference regardless of gender as they're just looking for a facial structure abstract, and not actually transposing their own face on the piece.
