I did a little math and money converting and all in all, I spend around $200 a month on basics for my cat (food, litter, decent insurance, etc), and that’s for a normal month.
At the end of last year he had his annual at the vets and that all together was around another $200. Plus fleas are on steroids now and most otc flea stuff doesn’t work, so that’s another $50ish dollars every 3 months for flea treatment (which you need even if you’ve got an inside cat).

Not counting his excess should I have to use his insurance, in the past 3 months I’ve spent about $850 on him. Granted, his does have to have special dry food for his kidneys because he’s an old man, but if Comet (which is a way better name than Loki, let’s be real) is a “special needs” cat, then he’s probably going to need special food. Which is expensive.

The fact that she expects strangers on the internet to drop that kind of money because she wants a cat is ridiculous, even for her. Her dad should just drop kick her down the stairs of her apartment building and do Comet a favour.

She has no idea what expenses go into having a cat, especially one with special needs. That “surgery fund” should be for the cat. She will need that for the cat.

maybe this is just me being a hick living in feral cat country but ive never had to pay to adopt a cat in my life. they've always showed up as strays, or were kittens being given away. of course that doesn't mean i want her to have a cat, but like, isn't there Craigslist in her area?

ive noticed that cats seem to come in two basic flavours. there's the spaztic eternal kitten that's always getting into trouble and insists on getting in your way, and then there's the couch potatoes that don't give a fuck. extravert vs introvert cats, i suppose. peetie seemed to be the introverted loafer type and could just be ignored or would hang with his real owners ma and pa frigly when staph got bored with him. what i'm worried about is gyro getting a level 9 clinger, a naughty cat that's always getting in the way, and gyro getting into one of her classic tard rages, and then the cat pushes over a houseplant at the wrong time in staph's retard cycle in the intro post, and that pushes gyro over the edge...

am i saying i expect her to actively abuse a cat? no, but cats have personalities that sometimes don't mesh with their owners' personality and lifestyle. a roommate and i didn't have the time or energy to deal with a sweet and cuddly but very naughty, high energy cat and roomie to make the painful decision to take her back to the shelter because neither of us could accommodate her energy. roomie and i felt so guilty but we could only deal with her jumping the baby gate at the door and chasing her around the apartment complex in the middle of the night so many times. she needed a family with kids to play with, not busy college students.
in an ideal world gyro would not get a cat, but if she did i hope it's a healthy couch potato that doesn't like exercise and doesn't cause trouble. staph's got a short temper and no patience; she couldn't deal with a hyperactive cat, especially one thats special needs.

Her buying all the cat litter and other stuff before the adoption is confirmed (most likely on that very likely maxed out credit card she's teasing begging to pay the bill for) reminds me of those wild teens on Maury that were stealing a horde of clothes and diapers for the baby they were sure to get after fucking five different guys. Same exact level of immaturity and entitlement. Only difference is Staph's situation is not dramatized for TV, and the cat that could be affected already exists.

$150 adoption fee is pure insanity. Local humane society would probably be much cheaper (source: my kitten was $15). And the cats only shelter where I worked in the past was about $60 iirc. In a much larger city than Binghamton.

It is extremely sketchy that she's been approved when this shelter is supposed to run checks on her background and whether or not her apartment allows pets. Had her friend's "help" lying, indeed -- or she gave them her parents' address. Also, not to accuse Lava of such, but some shelters' only concern is rehoming animals to clear up space. They don't care so much how the animal lives, just that they have a new home.

I'm kind of all for dropping Lava a warning tbh. Comet deserves so much better. /cat lady rant

Double checked, cats from my local SPCA are $50 and seniors (7+ yrs, if she wants one that is more likely to just lay around anyway and still feel like shes helping a disadvantaged demographic) are half off.

Or the method I thought everyone got cats by, you just take in one of the ten million strays and decide it lives with you now.

Around here, the expensive rescue (prices are similar) is the one that's also offering the free spay and neuter clinic. The money from the adoptions funds those clinics and fostering for pets. They do good work, but there are much cheaper ways to adopt a cat. I'm sure that's also the case where she is.

The point that others have been making stands: if she can't rustle up $150 for the adoption fee, then she won't have $150 when the cat eats a weird herb or has some other emergency-- that'll cost far more than $150. Her parents have presumably been paying for all of Peetie's food and ongoing care, so she doesn't even know how much it costs to care for a pet. She gets scammed regularly, and she just confessed to having a big credit card bill. She's in no financial position to adopt a pet, before you even into all the other ways she's unsuitable.

The Friglys clearly aren't coughing up the $150 adoption fee, so good for them.
