Gina Carano Sues Disney Over ‘Mandalorian’ Firing In Lawsuit Funded by Elon Musk

The actress claims the entertainment giant discriminated against her for voicing right-wing opinions on hot-button issues.

In an escalation of a standoff over her firing in The Mandalorian, Gina Carano is suing Disney and Lucasfilm for discrimination and wrongful termination in a lawsuit that opens another front in the battlefield for influence over Hollywood that has drawn in corporate America.

Carano, in a complaint filed on Tuesday in California federal court, alleges she was fired for voicing right-wing opinions on social media and seeks a court order that would force Lucasfilm to recast her. Elon Musk, making good on a promise to foot the legal bill for users who claim they have been discriminated against due to their activity on his platform, is helping fund the suit through X.

In a statement, X’s head of business operations Joe Benarroch said, “As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to free speech, we’re proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano’s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination.”

Lucasfilm in 2021 announced that Carano will not be returning to the hit series after sharing a post implying that being a Republican is like being Jewish during the Holocaust. It was the latest in a long string of posts in which the former MMA fighter drew the ire of social media users for her right-wing positions on hot-button issues. Carano, who was dropped by UTA following the controversy, previously mocked government mandates to wear masks during the COVID-19 pandemic and falsely suggested that voter fraud occurred during the 2020 presidential election.

According to the complaint, Disney and Lucasfilm harassed and defamed Carano for refusing to conform with their viewpoints on issues relating to Black Lives Matter, preferred pronouns and disproven claims of election interference. While she was allegedly fired for her cultural and religious beliefs, Carano argues that the entertainment giant turned a blind eye to her male costars, who allegedly made offensive and denigrating posts directed towards Republicans. She points to Pedro Pascal’s 2017 post comparing former president Donald Trump to Hitler.

The suit says Disney required Carano to meet with representative of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination and demanded a public apology.

“Defendants went so far as to try and convince Carano’s publicist to force Carano to issue a statement admitting to mocking or insulting an entire group of people, which Carano had never done,” the complaint states.

After she refused, Carano was told to meet with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and 45 employees who identify as LGBTQ+, according to the suit. She declined and was terminated shortly after from The Mandalorian, as well as other titles in the Star Wars universe, including Rangers of the New Republic.

Carano also alleges Disney engaged in a “post-termination smear campaign,” citing the abrupt removal of an episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls in which she appeared from the “show’s scheduled lineup” in an “effort to malign” her. Though the episode eventually aired, Disney allegedly omitted any mention of her name and likeness in promotional materials.

The suit faults Disney’s termination of Carano as the impetus for UTA and her transactional lawyer dropping her as a client.

Carano brings claims for wrongful discharge and sex discrimination. She seeks a court order that would force Lucasfilm to recast her and at least $75,000, plus punitive damages.

“Some of us have been unjustly singled out, harassed, persecuted and had our livelihoods stripped away because we dared to encourage conversation, asked questions, and refused to go along with the mob,” she said in a statement.

At-will employees, who make up the majority of private sector workers, often face an uphill climb in obtaining damages for terminations over problematic online posts deemed to be offensive and in violation of workplace policies. Unlike employees in the public sector, such workers are not shielded against discipline under the First Amendment.

On X funding the suit, Carano added, “I am honored that my case has been chosen to be supported by the company that has been one of the last glimmers of hope for free speech in the world.”

Last year, Musk pledged to fund legal action for users on X who claim they have faced discrimination by their employers over their activity on the platform. The offer came with “no limit” on costs, with Musk saying he would “go after the boards of directors of the companies too.”

Amid a hardening position on issues such as gender politics and race in the Republican Party, Ron DeSantis made “holding woke corporations accountable” one of the main pillars of his failed presidential campaign. Last year, he assumed control of the special tax district that controls development around Disney World in a move intended to retaliate against the company for voicing opposition to a law that limits classroom discussion on sexuality and gender.

Thanks to @Milkshake Sniffer on Disney multimedia thread for breaking this.

Its not as based as that. He personally has it in for Bob Iger after the two had a spat at a convention.
I don't even give a shit anymore. Disney deserves as much misery as possible (on general principle). Musk's antics amuse me endlessly. Woketards deserve not a moment's respite from the many whirlwinds they've sown over the past decade. The genuinely aggrieved deserve righteous crusades and victories.

Looks like this is ticking all the boxes for this old cow.

The heat of the Mandalorian is embering out, and Carano got fired right on the edge of getting her own show, but if getting fired for stupid fucking tweets was actionable, that Mexican who got fired off scream would have a case too.

I'd honestly go so far as to say Boba Fett killed the Mandalorian. They went through all the trouble of tying it to the clone wars series to distance the show from one hit sarlacc bait, and then circled back and forced him into the series like a shitty backdoor pilot. The shit with the moped gang was extremely gay.

Essentially, if you tweet like a retard, you get fired.

Musk says he is excited to pursue cases where users get fired for being retards on twitter. Good for him, he found a weird way to burn more money.

Carano compared herself to jews in the holocaust. That got her unpersoned by Disney.

Even if Carano managed to get blood from Disney, she is not going to get put back into the game. She's burned those bridges.

I don't like that it has to be over this (people have been blacklisted from Hollywood for literally every reason) and frankly, Star Wars under Disney is the last place Carano should want to continue her acting career, but it certainly sets a needed precedent. Disney has already paid through the nose for embracing 'wokeness' to the absurd degree that it has, but it's the legal consequences that are going to make them face reality.

After she refused, Carano was told to meet with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and 45 employees who identify as LGBTQ+, according to the suit.
Why.

Anyone who expects this to go anywhere is wildly optimistic.

That said though, its all speculation until the complaint drops. May be fun to make a thread for it in the legal drama forum. These sorts of spats rarely go anywhere though, and either it will be dismissed or she will settle for an undisclosed amount of money.

Every shit job will pull this. It's a shame campaign. Carano would show up, get bitched out, and nothing productive would happen. It would be a symbolic pound of flesh.

In all the antiwork meme texts, there is one where the manager says "We will have discussion about this on monday"

And the brave antiworker will reply "No we won't, mail me my check, I quit"

Which is what the employer really wanted in the first place. Culture warrior gets their false victory, manager gets a culture warrior the fuck out of their workplace.

It's a shame campaign.
I’m sure, but it doesn’t make any sense. The Tweet that got Carano fired was about the Holocaust, so why not shame her with a parade of Jewish employees instead of random genderspecials?

It’s like they just had to settle for the largest minority group in the building, as if to say ‘It doesn’t matter who’s offended, so long as somebody is.’

I'll be honest. I never had "Elite Infighting" on the potential list of causes for right-wing stuff getting a boost in publicity and/or funding. I sure as hell won't complain too much though since mutual self-interest makes the world go round.

That's pretty much my sentiment. So long as Musk is being a gift horse I won't look too closely at his teeth.

Would be a great case to win. I like her, even with her being a boomer conservatard. I would love to see Disney pay. I'd also love to see southern California drop into the ocean or a meteor slam in to Hollywood.

We're quietly funded by Elon too, but it's no wonder he will publicly attach his name to this case. If she wins on his dime he gets to bend her over while she wears the Mando helmet and she agrees to name the baby after a starship serial number. How can Null even compete with that?

She won't win. But it's going to be interesting to watch. If they get to full blown discovery that alone could be a reason for Musk to bankroll this.
I think that's the reason Elon is backing it, it will be interesting if disney settles to avoid discovery. How much is it worth to keep that shit hidden, wild times we live in.
