NEXT FEST 2.2024!

I haven't taken a look at these before, but this year I decided to scroll through 1000 games from the list. Most of the games were survival, horror, visual novels, story-driven, souls-likes, or rogue-likes and rogue-lites. That was a bummer because I have no interest in any of those genres (not that those games looked good anyway). As you'd expect there was a ton of shovelware.

Games I discovered:

  • Caesar's Revenge :agree: - A first-person-shooter action game inspired by the classics of the genre based around ancient Rome. This is one of rare modern boomer shooters I've seen that actually bother to replicate the look of a 90's era first-person-shooter.
  • Happy! the Hippo :disagree: - This 3D platformer is supposed to be the revival of an old game from the PS2 era that was scrapped. You play as a hippo that rolls around a 3D environment and collects coins and frogs. Despite the fact that your character rolls around constantly, the platforming looked pretty smooth.
  • Pepper Grinder :agree: - Pepper Grinder is a 2D platformer that lets you play as a woman with a drill that digs around the levels with the exaggerated swagger of a black teen. This game was announced 8 years ago and it looks like it'll finally arrive this year.
  • Demon Spore :achievement: - This game looks awesome. It's about the only rogue-like from the list that actually caught my interest. In this top-down shooter you play as a scientist trying to avoid the tendrils of a demon spore that spreads quickly across a science facility. Your goal is to avoid the tendrils of the monster and reach the exit. There's some neat interaction with the levels that I'd like to see more of.
  • Star Racer :disagree: - A classic retro racing game inspired by F-Zero with a twist. The track will sometimes abandon you. When that happens the game will turn into a racer/shoot 'em up hybrid and you are tasked with flying around in space to reach the finish line. The sprites in this look pretty damn good too.
  • HELL GALAXY :agree: - This is probably the most ambitious game of the festival. It's a 3D third-person space shoot 'em up like Star Fox with CRPG elements. The framerate in the trailer was all over the place which is worrisome. Hopefully they'll optimize it before launch.
  • Tiny Breakers Camp :agree: - This game is like Breakout except above the bricks there is a barricade you must bring down with your ball. On top of that there's enemies that your assembly of heroes will help you battle. The devs describe it as a "rogue-lite experience" with RPG action.
  • BioGun :agree: - This is a Metroidvania game where you play as a vaccine for dogs passing through a dog's organism. For a clone of Hollow Knight I thought it looked fun. It features some intriguing platforming action and surprisingly original enemies.

Recommendations:

  • Indika :disagree: - A third-person, story-driven game by Russian developers about a schizo nun.
  • Monomyth :disagree: - First-person dungeon crawl with RPG mechanics.
  • Ultros :agree: - Psychedelic metroidvania made by the guy who did artwork and music for the Hotline Miami games. This one will come out in a week
  • MULLET MAD JACK:achievement: - A first-person-shooter game with an authentic classic anime look. You are only given 10 seconds to complete the levels, but killing an enemy increases the timer by 3 seconds.
  • Star Trucker :agree: - In this game you play as a trucker in space. Your job is to haul cargo between vast distances.
  • Pacific Drive :agree: - First-person adventure game that takes place in a supernatural post apocalypse. Your survival depends on sci-fi gadgets and your car, which you can enhance and customize in a variety of ways.
  • Lightyear Frontier :disagree: - Open-world farming simulator... except you're in a big mech!
  • Menace from the Deep :disagree: - A rogue-like card game. Drawing inspirations from Lovecraft's work among other things.
  • Berserk Boy:disagree: - A Mega Man clone with far too much anime.
  • MANIAC :agree: - Classic GTA with a twist.
  • RawMetal:disagree: - A top-down stealth game like Metal Gear Solid combined with a beat 'em up. Expect lots of cel shading.
  • The Amazing Crackpots Club! :agree: - 2D brawler where the stage is split in half. You have to throw projectiles at the big jar in your opponent's side while protecting your big jar. It's just as weird as it sounds.
  • Dystopika :disagree: - A construction game that's set in a cyberpunk world.
  • Mouthwashing :disagree: - A first-person story-driven horror game about a heist that went wrong.
  • Night Stones :agree: - A top-down adventure game such as the likes of Zelda.
  • Eclipsium :disagree: - Another first-person horror game. This one is more oriented towards puzzle-solving.
  • Children of the Sun :agree: - A shooter game where you play as the bullet.
  • Abiotic Factor :disagree: - What if Half Life was a coop survival game? Game developers should never ask themselves such questions.
  • Corpus Edax :disagree: - A very lazy and pretentious CRPG set in a cyberpunk world.
  • Rotwood :agree: - A dungeon crawler hack 'n slash with high fantasy elements and coop play. It's also in cartoon form.
  • #BLUD :disagree: - Cartoon beat 'em up where you face up against vampires.
  • DICEOMANCER:agree: - A rogue-like deckbuilder game... with dice.
  • Real of Ink :agree: - A rogue-like game such as the likes of Hades. There's ink too.
  • The Touhou Empires :disagree: - More Touhou. This time in RTS form.
  • Moduwar :agree: - A RTS game where you play as a sentient island.
  • Toy Shire :agree: - A tower defense game where you play with toys.
  • Crow Country :agree: - Retro PSX horror adventure with fixed camera angles.

Demos that myself or others in the thread have had fun with will get an :agree:, while the demos that sucked will be hit with a :disagree:. If you have another demo to suggest, then post it and I will add it to the OP.
An :achievement: means that the demo is great. You should really consider buying these games when they come out.

Thanks for the heads up.
I've been following Monomyth for a while. It's a dungeon crawler in the spirit of Ultima Underworld. Apparently they released a demo for this event. I'll check it out when I get home but I'm not expecting that much tbh.

Pepper Grinder was a pretty smooth platformer with cool music. They did a pretty good job blending the grinding gimmick with actual platforming and puzzles.

Bit Esc - A cutesy 2D platformer where the levels are based on a desktop environment. It looked like a perfectly fine flash game, though I do hope it will be more engaging than your typical flash game because it's going to be sold on Steam.
I tried playing this but it wouldn't launch, and when I tried launching directly from it's files I got a bunch of error pop-ups saying that critical files were missing. Whatever the problem is I hope it gets patched because it seems interesting.

Anyway, here's two games I'm interested that I haven't seen mentioned yet.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2386310/Ultros/

Psychedelic metroidvania made by the guy who did artwork and music for the Hotline Miami games, and it releases this month too.

Retro anime-styled FPS where the main gimmick is that you only have ten seconds to complete a floor, but you get 3 extra seconds every time you kill an enemy.

Three that aren't mentioned in the OP. Star Trucker, Pacific Drive, and Lightyear Frontier.

I've not played any. Pacific Drive I'm waiting for the full release. Lightyear Frontier I'll lass on for now due to Palworld. Which leaves Star Trucker, which I might check out, we'll see.

Pacific Drive is Jalopy where you drive an 80s estate car through a Stalker esc exclusion zone. Lightyear Frontier is a crafting survival early access farming game, but with mechs. Star Trucker is Jalopy meets Euro Truck Simulator ...in spaaace!

Yeah the demo they uploaded must be broken because I'm having the same issues. BioGun's devs somehow forgot to include the demo file in the demo release.

Indika is being made by the same people who also made Frostpunk and who made that one Stanislaw Lem based scifi game called The Invincible that I am looking for a sale to get so it might be interesting. Monomyth looks promissing too.

Another game that got a demo is Millennia, a Civilization like being published by Paradox but made by another studio. It seems pretty fun, with more in depth government and culture mechanics and it also have a "Ages" mechanic which unlike the ages in Civ you can change. You always start on Stone and then Broze, but then for example the next age could be the Age of Heroes if you do a lot of exploring or the Age of Blood if you start a bunch of wars and this will affect how your civ progresses in the future.

Star Racer was horrible. You play with 19 other racers and you lose health when you bump into them. The collision detection was so bad that sometimes it would have me zig-zagging between walls until I ran out of health. And if you run out of health, you're sent all the way back to the title screen.

Tiny Breakers Camp was a nice relaxing game. I don't think you can go wrong with this one if you like Breakout.

Played a bit of Welcome to ParadiZe, it's your typical survival game with crafting and shit. You can capture a zombie or more and they will fight on your side. You can put a saddle on one and ride it like a horse, LMAO. It's playable solo or with co-op.
It's made by a small studio and published by Nacon.

I added it even though the developer looks like this:
