Plagued Consoomers / Consoomer Culture - Because if it has a recogniseable brand on it, I’d buy it!

Apple is a trendsetter.

Google is the shit your boring grandparents use.
Apple also shit out Siri and every faggot with a "tech" blog was proclaiming it to be a revolution in personal computing. It was like the heavens themselves parted and deposited a holy artifact upon us mere mortals.

To this day I have not seen a single person IRL use it, and it's been almost a decade and a half - because it turns out it's fucking gay, just like these faggot goggles. And you didn't even have to pay $3500 for that.

I use Siri when I’m cooking for timers or changing music and I don’t want to cover my phone in raw meat, flour, etc. Thats all it’s really all it’s good for.

Everyone joked when Apple revealed the iphone as well.
The iPhone I'd argue was different. It was just a natural evolution of stuff already popular on the market, especially for business folks (ie Blackberry handhelds) and could easily be carried around for convenience. They were just smart enough to add sparkly buttons and ride off the "cool" coattails of the iPod to make it marketable to normies.

If it wasn't giant snorkling goggles on someones face, I'd say maybe it had a chance.

It was usability and ease of use that was key. There was no Android and compared to the Blackberry and co, it was a league ahead in UI design and accessibility.

I recently stumbled across the world of pen consooming. While the most sought after and expensive variety is by far the fountain pen, autistic collectors and exorbitantly priced luxury models of ballpoints and roller balls also exist. In the case of fountain pen collectors, the obsession extends to ink.

YouTube channels exist to give pen reviews, discuss new releases, and showcase collections that cost more than the average annual wage.

Subreddits exist to share advice and enable shopping addictions.

There are old school forums where they discuss pens in even more autistic detail to the point of being a bit boring to read through, the most interesting things I saw were a thread on collection databases so users can keep track of the hundreds of pens they own and the fact that they like to organise IRL pen club meetups.
TikTok tags exist as well but I don't have an account. I have a feeling (:optimistic:) that it's maybe not as bad as other parts of the internet because pen autists seem to skew middle aged and male, while TikTok skews young and female.

This guy left $40,000 worth of pens in a car and they got stolen lmao

How many pens would there need to be to add up to 40k, could you even carry them all by hand? The answer is you need to see the absurd prices these things can go for, a house deposit worth of pens could fit in a school pencil case.

The pen stuff is fascinating, @Yeeted Teet. It sheds some light on an old kind-of mystery of mine.
I used to be really into collecting merch from a popular anime franchise, and would often search ebay for new merch to score deals. For some reason, certain fountain pens would occasionally share keywords with this category, and show up in the search results. They intrigued me because they always looked like some cheap stuff from China, with stocks photos and everything, but would sell for $2k easily, which dwarfed the value of 99% of the items in my category - scale figurines, rare merch, special editions, all dwarfed by these random ass pens. I thought for awhile that maybe I stumbled upon some kind of scam or money laundering thing because they REALLY didn't look like much, it was the same 1-2 pens over and over with Chinese stock photos selling for $2k each.

Even Voyager back in the 00s (10s?) Was calling out non-tactile interfaces on stuff. Bring back switches, buttons and toggles!

Everyone on Voyager thought Tom Paris was a twat for his fetishization of tactile and analog interfaces. Janeway even compares using a 90s-era keyboard to using "stone knives and bearskins" in Future Imperfect, the episode where the ship travels to 1996 LA and fights Steve Jobs.

They're also so addicted to Apple Vision Pro that they're seen walking in the streets with this thing on. This is a new low.

Spending $3000 on a glorified Occulus is peak consoomerism. However, if you actually spend that much and find out that you can't do whatever the fuck you want with it, I understand the rage.

The Tactile feedback of Blackberry was really good.

I just wish Auto manufacturers went back to Tactile dashboards instead of electronic screens.
God's truth. I hope whatever fucking retard first came up with the idea of replacing every control in your car with a single giant touchscreen got maimed and disfigured in a car crash. Not only is it incredibly gay to operate everything in your car via a glorified smartphone but the complete lack of any kind of feedback other than visual means it distracts you from the road by design, which is dangerous and REALLY dumb.

There's also the anti-consumer ransomware angle: having every single control and feature of the car defined in software (as opposed to having hardware buttons) means the manufacturer can remove features from your car and fuck with your preferences at will unless you pay a subscription fee or something. Neat huh?

Remember all those "This update has made it possible to charge your iPhone by microwaving it/waterproof/etc" 4chan hoaxes?

Can't wait for them to say "The new software update makes your Tesla automatically drift really cool just like a race car driver if you go over 70mph around a turn really fast."

It’s not just “a glorified Oculus” though.

It also comes with a built in M2 or M3 CPU which usually comes in $1500-$2000 laptop.

Add to that top tier micro LED displays and features that you don’t see on any other VR helmet and it adds up.

It’s kinda like an Nvidia 4090 GPU. It’s obscenely expensive for “just being a graphics card” but is expensive for a reason.

It’s expensive yeah, but it’s expensive for a reason and doesn’t cost a few hundred dollars to produce.

It’ll be really interesting if/when this thing gets jailbroken.

Yes, but it also means they can insert advertisements into the very expensive vehicle, and get some of the same kind of money those smartphone manufacturers get to enjoy. It's also slightly easier to have fewer parts across different vehicle types.

There's more of that easy money.

All of this is a symptom of a world in which everything arguably works too well. It allows greedy capitalists to purposefully break things for even more money. Have a phone worthless for making phonecalls in an emergency; have a vehicle impossible to drive without distractions.

Just as real telephone networks and telephone manufacturers hardly exist anymore, perhaps so will automobile manufacturers:

Tesla started that said trend, literally turning a giant screen into the car equivalent of an Artosis Pylon, meaning that when it eventually fails, you're fucked in regards to doing everything with your car. Tesla has even made it worse on their newer models, since they removed the Mercedes-Benz-sourced shift stalk and made it into a screen control, if you want to switch from Drive to Reverse, or vice versa.

Going back to Consoomerism, the jaw-dropping prices for high-end racing wheels is pure :lunacy: . Here's one example, the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Extreme, which costs a whopping $1300:

It sounds like a $1300 racing wheel is an even worse way to blow money, than even on high-end smartphones, or the other tech crap Apple peddles out these days. And yet, the diehard GT fans will go full-on "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!" mode, just because.
