I think a lot of the confusion derives from the fact that those on the American dissident right expected Putin to give a defense based on the understanding they have of the situation, which is as fundamentally flawed as the establishment understanding because it's derived from their own ideological and historical understanding of things. Putin gave a Russian nationalist version of events, in a particularly spergy way. It's not one that I agree with because I have an understanding of the history and culture more than the average American, but I doubt even a well-read intelligent American could easily parse it unless they've read at depth on the source materials cited.
There's also the fact that I think Putin chose the route he did not because he particularly wants to convince anyone his actions are just and correct, but highlight the stark differences between the American political elite and the elite of nations opposing the GAE. In short, he wanted to contrast the fundamental lack of knowledge and context, the inability to put their minds into the minds of a foreign person and place and think with their priors, and the sheer unseriousness and ineptitude of the leaders of the GAE.
That said, I don't agree with Putin's read at all. Most of the inhabitants of Ukraine do not see themselves as part of Greater Russia, and due to my value system, that stands for something. Certainly they spring from the same source, have extremely similar languages and cultures, and were intimately intertwined for centuries. The separate Ukrainian national identity may be the result of historically recent elite machinations from the Hapsburgs to the Soviets and now to the GAE, but it now exists as a deeply felt sentiment by the majority of the population, and to undo it by force in a short time is a fool's errand.
That said, all of this is none of my business personally, and none of the business of the nation I live in, and interfering in it is creating a generation of dead youth on both sides of the border.

@dustbuster He is probably running to scrape votes off of any actual Republican who might run. I have a feeling we are going to see that happening more and more. It is the only reason Haley is still running.

I love the "He reduced the cost of insulin" thing cause my former buddy was saying the republicans were still blocking that even though they aren't and even denied Biden got rid of Trumps executive order about it when he got into office.
It's fucking maddening.

On a side note, anybody noticed the biden defense force has started creeping into A&N a bit in the past few days? (lot of really new accounts or ones from around 2020/2021 running defense for him)

I do consider Putin to be our Cao Cao. I wouldn't trust what he says and he certainly does not represents me or my nation's interest, but he is intelligent and to actually counter him requires a deep understanding of what he says... which Americans are just not trained to do anymore.

If you want to negotiate with them, you have to understand where they're coming from.
Overall, I say Right of Conquest is the only true arbiter. Russia owns Crimea because no one else can take it from them. Likewise, if Ukraine can remain a sovereign entity, it has the right to do so. If it collapses and get absorbed into Russia, that is also Russia's right. Any country that fails to defend itself does not deserve to exist.

I mean, the short, concise answer is "I wanted it for Russia, so I took it". The "why did you want it" was never going to be simple unless you're just grabbing a particular resource.
