Nebula (archive) is a streaming service created by the Standard Broadcast LLC content management group and Dave Wiskus, in 2019. CuriosityStream is stated to have an investment in them as well. Nebula advertises itself as a platform that seeks to uncouple creators from restrictions present on platforms such as YouTube, while also provding funding to some in order to improve the scope of content produced.

Nebula is notable for featuring a good number of creators in their upper echelons who are associated with the BreadTube community, including but not limited to Hbomberguy, Lindsay Ellis, and Abigail Thorn. The company states that 50% of the subscription profits are distributed to the creators based upon watch time.

This platform caught my attention recently during the Hbomberguy plagiarism drama. A major focus of the video was on a creator named James Somerton, and discussions of his poor use of citations as well as his failures in adhering to certain progressive lines. In looking into Somerton, I found information regarding his vocal criticism of Nebula as a platform, which caused somewhat of a stir in that sector (archive).

Given Harris' association with Nebula, and certain financial ties, it is worth considering how much of the decision to discuss Somerton could have been motivated by the latter's negative comments regarding the platform.
It is my somewhat baseless belief that Nebula is to some degree integral to the behind the scenes coordination of BreadTube, though the degree to which this is the case if at all is presently unknown.

The parent company only lists 4 employees on LinkedIn, with the highest listed rank seemingly only being a CFO. They also seem to lack a specific company site.

Their LLC registration is kind of weird, (archive), very little information. They registered with New York but their stated jurisdiction is Wyoming. They are registered in both NY and WY.

Nebula got one infusion of venture capital in 2023 but have two other late stage VC suckers still in process from last year per Pitchbook.
But I thought Nebula didn't want venture capital money!

I’ve never been less worried about the future of Nebula. I’d just much rather answer to the creators and the audience than to venture capitalists.

Venture capitalists hit us up constantly. We don’t want to do that. We’re much more interested in building this with you.

Rather than take a loan or take investment from venture capitalists, we decided to experiment with lifetime memberships as a way to let the audience themselves place a bet on us.

I curled and parsed their creators page, hopefully this didn't fuck up.

Okay, where funny?
Outside of them having many people with threads as headliners, nothing yet. I don't necessarily anticipate this being a funny thread, but I do think that it's worth looking into. If you want to hold that against me I don't blame you. I do think the nebula aspect of the hbomberguy plagiarism video does deserve some attention, the entire incident was kind of saturated with attention on the internet historian segment, but there's a lot more to it than that.

Needs more work but could be interesting. Do you have any leads on something aside from the hbomberguy incident ?

I would say don't worry about the funny. If it's not lolcow enough this thread can always go in off-topic. I've always wanted a thread on Nebula because of their ties to many lolcows.

I remember seeing NileRed talking about joining and wondering WTF he was talking about. It did give me a weird vibe.

Heh, I looked into this about a month ago once I saw people like Lindsey Ellis and Abigail Thorn (can't even remember his real name) where on there. I payed for a year a couple of years ago when they were running a bundle deal with Nebula and Curiosity Stream but did not renew because I never watched it. Came up again because two channels I like, Mustard and Paper Skies are both putting more videos on it instead of their YT channels, supposedly because YT fucks with their monetization or something.

I saw the CEO appears to be a BreadTuber enjoyer but didn't see much else about him. But that was enough to decide not to sign up again. This might be good as a community watch thread or even just put it in Multimedia. It may not be really lolcowy right now, but I see potential for it in the future.

I'm skeptical this works out once the advertisers find out the demographic profile of the audience.

Though I am willing to entertain the possibility that it's not actually a business.

Throughout the day, internally I've been referring to it as "BreadTube Inc."

Powerword: Oliver Thorn.
Oliver Lennard, Thorn is the stagename bullshit for his drag persona cause hes a drama nigger

Also Nebula was founded by the guy who made the Discovery Channel. Thats one of the parts of the pitch when Hbomb first shilled it in 2018 as a documentary platform for science documentaries. Thats probably worth looking into, its like censored.tv for commies.

I didnt expect a lot of these people on the list though, Razbuten, Closer look and LFTS surprised me. Man Carrying thing and Like Stories of Old felt a bit commie so I knew they would be on there but the others seem wholesome and non communist, Im gonna feel bad unsubbing from them. Same with Tierzoo, he just seemed like an average guy. Im surprised AccentedCinema isnt here though, hes also a commie, chinese canadian commie infact so he should be a prime candidate. No Dan Olson or Adam Conover as well, very strange.

Put it into Multimedia because there's not much of a Community Watch to look out for

Always got weird vibes from these people. Like some of them make decent videos, but they're just so cliquey that it's kinda unsettling. Like they all seem like the type of person who has one of those "in this house we believe..." signs in their yard

The only interesting bit of drama I know about them is that champagne socialist Second Thought, who previously did a show for Nebula about driving luxury cars, was kicked off their platform last year after saying and endorsing psychotic shit like in regards to the Israel Palestine conflict
